The British Youth Band Association, or BYBA, was formed in 1974 by Glen Carter. It aims to promote the marching band activity, to encourage the social aspects of bands and to enhance personal development through all aspects of bands. BYBA has also set up rules for contests, and divided all marching bands into classes. The 1992 season saw 117 units marching across the Novice, Contest, Championship and Premier Classes. By the 2003 season, the system had changed into 40 units marching across Divisions 1,2,3,4 and the Cadets league. [edit] Scoring
BYBA has a very strict scoring system. Units are marked on 7 different captions:
- General Musical Effect (GME)
- General Visual Effect (GVE)
- Drill And Deportment
- Field Wind
- Field Percussion
- Colourguard
- Turnout
GME is out of 250 points. It is in two parts: programme analysis is about how well and with how much creativity the music is arranged, and performance effectiveness is how well it is played, taking into account dynamics, tempo and other things. GVE is out of 250 points. It is also in two parts: programme analysis is how well space, time and creativity are used in writing the drill for the show, and performance effectiveness is how good it looks to an audience. Drill and Deportment is out of 200 points. It is in two parts: technique is how much control is shown in the drill, as well as responsibility for your own drill shown. Execution is about staying in step and showing spatial awareness. Field Wind is out of 150 points. It is in two parts: technique is about tone control and articulation, and execution is about uniformity and precision in the music. Field Percussion is out of 150 points. It is also in two parts: technique is about rudiments and timing as a section, and execution is about uniformity and precision in the music. Colourguardis out of 200 points.
