Britannia Secondary School is a community school located in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Britannia is the catchment secondary school for the surrounding elementary schools Lord Strathcona Elementary School, Britannia Elementary School, Admiral Seymour Elementary School and Queen Victoria Annex.
[edit] History
Now the oldest remaining secondary school in Vancouver, Britannia was established in 1908, with classes held in the Admiral Seymour building, and moved into its current building in 1910.
In September, 1955, the gymnasium and cafeteria were added to the old building. Grade 8 and 9 students were enrolled for the first time during this year.
During the 1966-67 school year, a new wing was constructed providing additional Science, Industrial Education, Home Economics, and Business Education classrooms. The new wing now also houses the School Office.
In 1972, Britannia Secondary became Britannia Elementary-Secondary School, boasting an elementary school and a secondary school within the same complex, and a community centre built around the secondary school. Britannia is the only public school in Vancouver to have a K-12 enrollment.
[edit] Enriched Courses
Britannia offers an International Baccalaureate programme for grades 11–12 and a "Venture" programme for grades 8–10. Britannia and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School are the only two public secondary schools in Vancouver to offer the IB Programme.
The Venture programme prepares students intending to enter IB in grade 11 to gain leadership skills, and offers a more enriching educational experience than regular classes.
