Brighton Hill

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brighton Hill is a district of Basingstoke formed around 1970 as part of the Town Centre Development Plan. The area is bounded to the west by the adjacent district of Hatch Warren and by the A30, Harrow Way and Hatch Warren Lane. Cul-de-sacs in the district are named after composers.

At the centre of the district is Brighton Hill District Centre. The Centre was originally constructed at the same time as most of the housing in the area and comprised 12 small retail units, one supermarket unit, Pig & Whistle pub and The Gillies Health Centre. Sainsbury's occupied the supermarket unit until 1992 when it opened its Hatch Warren store. Between 1992 and 1998 the unit was occupied by Robert Grieg and was left vacant following the store's closure in 1998. After this the village centre fell into decline with about half of the tenants of the smaller retail units leaving.

In 2002 construction started on a new supermarket developed by Proudreed and occupied by Asda. The opening of the new store has helped regenerate the district centre and now all retail units are occupied and a new medium sized unit has been opened.
