Brian Meehan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brian Meehan was a senior Irish criminal in the massive Dublin drug gang lead by John Gilligan. Meehan, originally a street dealer in Dublin, rose through the ranks of Gilligan's gang to become his lieutenant after it became obvious to Gilligan that Meehan was a smart, ruthless character.

He was perceived by the Irish police as very arrogant and rude individual who had no respect for the decent morals of society. Once, while in custody, he started to masturbate in front of a female officer while being interrogated. This earned him the nickname of "The Tosser" by the Irish police.

Meehan was arrested in Amsterdam by authorities after he fled the Republic of Ireland following the murder of crime journalist Veronica Guerin in 1996. He was subsequently extradited by the Dutch authorities and convicted of the murder of Guerin. He is currently sentenced to life imprisonment.

Shortly after Meehan's conviction, a home video emerged in the Irish media of a holiday in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Among those present on the holiday were Meehan and Gilligan, as well as other members of the gang. Meehan was seen on the video in a hotel bar, raising a glass of champagne and gloating "This one's for you Veronica. Who says crime doesn't pay?" This video caused public outrage in the Irish Republic and more controversy was to follow after it was revealed that Meehan described the murder of Guerin as a "good hit".
