From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brian D. Ripley is a distinguished statistician, professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Oxford and a Professorial fellow at St Peter's College.
Ripley has made important contributions to the fields of spatial statistics, pattern recognition, and has been influenctial in the development of the S and its implementations in S-PLUS and R. Ripley has coauthored 2 books based on S, Modern Applied Statistics with S and S Programming. His work on artificial neural networks (and also Leo Breiman's work in related areas) in the 1990s was highly influential in bringing aspects of machine learning and data mining to statistical audiences.
He has made important contributions to the theory of Markov Chain Monte Carlo and, in Modern Applied Statistics with S and Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks has emphasised the value of robust statistics.
