[edit] Chennai

I'm the guy at User talk:128.46.143.54 who made the edits to Chennai and Kapaleeshwarar temple. I was signed in at the time but I think I flushed my cookie cache halfway through! That's why the article change is listed under my IP address and not my username. Sorry for the confusion. I'm currently adding material to Chennai. Do you know of any good, free satellite maps of the city? I found two at digitalglobe but I'm not sure if we can use them here. --Brhaspati 07:16, 2005 Jan 9 (UTC)

This Tamil nadu Government site has the map of Chennai district (not Chennai city). However, you need to get permission from the site manager. Harikishoreaj has got permission for Tamil Nadu map. See Image:TamilNaduDistricts.png for details and whom to approach. -- Sundar 11:12, Jan 9, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] INCOTW

Hi, thanks for taking chipping with the INCOTW selections this week. I have been quite busy at work and unable to respond to your queries. May I request you to display the Template India_quick_links at the top of your user page. It would help other wikipedian interested in India some pointers. Cheers Arunram 10:17, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Done. -- Brhaspati (talk, contribs) 10:24, 2005 Feb 20 (UTC)

[edit] Seeking you support

I am seeking your support and participation for starting the "Indian Collboration of the Week". Please enlist your support on the page Wikipedia_talk:Indian_wikipedians'_notice_board if you would like to support. Thanks Arunram 08:24, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

On my way. -- Brhaspati 22:00, 2005 Jan 21 (UTC)
Thanks for enlisting and your support. I look forward to editing articles collboratively with you. regards Arunram 01:07, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Madras bashai

Just to let you know that my current project is Madras bashai. I'd like to link it strongly with Tamil language (that's the basic substrate). Do you know what exactly Ethnologue means by the "Madras dialect" of Tamil? Does that include the practice of converting "paditthu" to "padchi" and "eppadi irukke?" to "eppadi kiray?"? Or does it refer to something else? -- Brhaspati 12:20, 2005 Feb 18 (UTC)

[quoting from dialect ] "A dialect is a complete system of verbal communication (oral but not necessarily written), with its own vocabulary, grammar, and syntax."

This means that Madras bashai is a dialect of Tamil. Let me give more inputs when I come back on tuesday. Can you in the mean time take care of the FAC nomination for Tamil? We should nominate Chennai next for that. -- Sundar 12:49, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

I'll keep an eye on Tamil language until Tuesday. The definition of dialect you gave is very accurate, but how do we justify that this is a dialect of Tamil and not English? How do we show what was the base substrate and what was the addition? Also, I've started a discussion on Talk:Chennai regarding improvements for FAC. Please suggest improvements on that page. Thanks. -- Brhaspati 22:17, 2005 Feb 18 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with Tamil. Will definitely do the best I can with Chennai. I'll also look at Madras bashai. -- Sundar 04:26, Feb 23, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Flavia Pennetta

Just to let you know, I didn't think this was a proper speedy deletion candidate, so I moved it to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Flavia Pennetta. Please take a moment to vote there. Thanks! Postdlf 02:46, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Speedies

Hi. You've been marking a lot of articles for speedy deletion recently. Please review Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion; you'll see that there are specific criteria for articles to be speedily deleted. If the articles do not meet the criteria, please use WP:VFD instead. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 03:19, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for reverting that vandal who seemed to develop a particular vendetta against me over the Shivan patel thing at VFD today. I don't know if you saw it, but he also vandalised my userpage twice - he came back under another ISP number. Some people just don't take "delete" as an answer! Cheers! 23skidoo 08:07, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Chennai

Thanks and i will try to have a look at chennai on the weekend. cheers kaal 03:42, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Catholic Article

I will transfer the content. Just out of curiosity, had you been working a lot with the Roman Catholics by Country article a lot before? Dpr 04:15, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No, not at all. I sometimes keep an eye on new articles and see if they match existing articles in content. If the new article is substantial, I add a {{merge}} template. In the case of Catholic countries, it was very short and seemed to be covered by the Roman Catholics by Country article completely (at least the first version was), so I requested deletion. Following your indication that you were willing to expand the article, I withdrew it. So that's the sequence of events. Cheers! -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 16:50, 2005 Mar 11 (UTC)

[edit] Your identity

Madras bashai became so popular that people started forwarding the article in every mailing list that I am in! One friend of mine asked if you are the same as Vishi. Reply me over email if you don't want to reveal your identity here and remove this section. -- Sundar 05:33, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

Good Lord! :-) No, I'm not Vishi. Also, I didn't really start that article. I merely moved it from Tanglish and expanded it a bit before it started (inexplicably) growing of its own accord! I'm now trying to review it at least once a day to fix minor issues. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 05:46, 2005 Mar 16 (UTC)

Oh, fine. -- Sundar 06:20, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Chennai History

I moved some of the history (particularly dealing with the creation of new states, etc) from the history of Chennai to Tamil Nadu history as it doesn't really pertain to Chennai specifically, and therfore doesn't belong there imho. As for moving the bulk of the history to another article, my personal prefrence would be to keep it as one article, but it would be understandable to move it to another article due to the large size of the main article. Regards, srs 05:46, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Indian Railways

Hi - I think neutral zones and dead zones are the same thing. Official IR term is neutral zone, where the catenary wire is unelectrified. There are a few of those between Diva and Kalyan as well. Binand 15:59, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Loco changes and Neutral Sections are unrelated (except in the old Mumbai when WCM locos used to operate; but these have been retired now). Loco changes happen at stations where a trip shed (different from a loco shed) exists. Igatpuri has one, Pune has another - hence CR's loco changes occur at these places. On WR, the next trip shed is at either Valsad or Vadodara (I don't remember which), hence loco change happens there. The WCAM/WCAG series locos do not drift away too far from Mumbai as though they can run elsewhere on AC regions, they are specifically needed due to their DC-ness in Mumbai region. On the other hand, I do think some trains go with WCAM locos upto Manmad (which also has a trip shed) and it would be interesting to see how they cover Igatpuri (like the trains from CST to Nanded or Nizamabad) - Binand 17:20, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Oh ok, I get what you mean, and I think I was wrong. Check http://irfca.org/faq/faq-elec.html#dead which has more info on this. - Binand 18:20, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The ticket image should probably be in the section on ticketing - Binand 23:18, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yup. Moved. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 23:33, 2005 Apr 4 (UTC)

[edit] Images

I noticed your Indian railway related images. I would request you to upload your photo to Wikipedia commons. In this way your image can be shared with all sister wiki languages instead of reuploading the images. Just create an account there to start uploading.  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 18:45, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] India stubs - cats, templates?

I'm pleased to see that you are adding stubs on many cities and districts of India, but can I suggest that you add categories and templates at the same time, like the ones I added to Dang? I know a lot of places don't have categories and templates yet, but they could be created. Kappa 00:52, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Good point. Listing this on Wikipedia_talk:Notice_board_for_India-related_topics#Wikiproject_for_districts_of_India. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 01:01, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

[edit] images commons

If there are any duplicates on en wiki, let me know I'll delete them. PS. I deleted the howrah zoomed image (licence plate) you created as I had a v. high resolution of the original image. I just cropped the portion and reuploaded it to commons.  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 18:25, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Thanks, but probably not yet

I think you deserve the barnstar. I looked at your contribs, and you have made 19 pages on India just in the first 50 edits I looked at. It's up to you to take it, put you deserve it. Howabout1 23:47, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] From your univmate

Hi, you seem to be from IIT Madras (from you contributions to that article and your tidel park photo) the same univ. I'm from. Is there any chance that either of us knows the other... -- Paddu 14:11, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Ouch! Uncomfortable question! Yes, I did study at IITM some years back. We probably know each other by sight but not personally. "Brhaspati" bears no resemblance to either my real name or my nickname in college. I still hope to not disclose my real identity here at least for now (unless there's a Wikipedian meet-up or something). If you think you've identified me, send me email through the wiki system. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 22:18, 2005 Apr 10 (UTC)
OK so you haven't identified me! So that'd mean I don't know you either, since I forget people more than they could forget me (probably because of my dimensions ;)). BTW to use the GFDL images, just put in the image description page exactly the same info. as I've put on the two images, except that you could mention that the guy who claims permission is granted is User:Paddu and not yourself. BTW locating the source of many copyvios is quite easy -- use images.google.com & proper search terms (I've seen some copyvio'tors copy the filenames too!). -- Paddu 16:09, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
BTW I'd like to remind you that it is recommended that free images be uploaded in the Wikimedia Commons so that they could be shared across Wikimedia projects. Once uploaded there, you could add the commons:Category:Chennai tag to them so they are not orphaned. -- Paddu 19:16, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Khan

Please don't create junk redirects like this. I've deleted them. - UtherSRG 01:59, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)

Huh? Redirecting Khaaan to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was a bad redirect? Google seems to disagree. Anyway I won't create the redirects if they're not wanted. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 02:07, 2005 Apr 11 (UTC)
Addendum: Try typing "khaa..." on Google Suggest :-). -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 02:14, 2005 Apr 11 (UTC)

[edit] ActiveStealth

I'm curious about two things: one, why did you put your "ActiveStealth" article in Category:Hoaxes? two, did you realize you left the tag "live" (so that the page is showing up in the category already?) If you wanted to leave the tag in so it's not forgotten but not have the page show up in the category, you could put a ":" just after the opening "[[" of the category tag. -- Antaeus Feldspar 00:03, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

That subpage IS a hoax. Look at the photos in the article, and the creation date! I've just removed the category tag so that it's not listed there (might confuse people searching for genuine hoaxes). -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 00:14, 2005 Apr 16 (UTC)

[edit] Indian districts

Nice work on the Indian districts. Is it possible that you disambiguate the links so that if the name of the district and it hq are shared, the district reads as: eg. Ratnagiri district and the hq as Ratnagiri. Also Bilaspur is a common district name to both MP and HP.  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 19:36, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)

Related to Indian districts, thanks for the stubs all over the place. One such stub that is now a full article (or at least, I think it is) is Adilabad.

[edit] images

Images that are moved to commons need not be placed on IFD. I'll delete then later today.  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 06:53, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)

I've deleted the images.  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 19:45, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] India flag

I noticed the India flag you uploaded recently. I think its a little too yellow. It may be that my monitor is at fault. Could you verify the colours?  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 18:37, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)

Here's the source. The "Colours of the flag" section mentions "255-204-0" for saffron (hex equivalent FFCC00) and "51-153-51" for green (hex 339933). The reasoning apparently was that the Indian flag saffron is supposed to be between the flag of Brunei and flag of Ireland in hue. I can't verify this myself, but FOTW in general is reputable. A zoomed-in version of the Ashoka chakra is provided at the bottom of the page. If you want the code I used to make this image, it's at User:Brhaspati/indflag. You're welcome to modify it. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 18:49, 2005 Apr 19 (UTC)
Good idea using Matlab. I'll try and run the code through Matlab in a day or two. Perhaps my monitor is at fault. I'll verify. :)  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 19:16, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)

Cant find an official page where the colours are mentioned, world flag database [1],shows the saffron as #E77329, I did a image google for our flag, and there are far too many varients. I looked up the GOI official directory [2] and the saffron there is #FB7700, I think we should hold it as official, I have made a flag for it, if you agree, I'll upload it. --Girish 16:35, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

Sure. My image was based only on the FOTW information and I too couldn't find anything more official than "India saffron" (or sometimes "kesari") and "India green". So what are the colors again? Are they #FB7700 for saffron and #138808 for green? I'll change the Matlab code accordingly. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 20:06, 2005 Apr 21 (UTC)

[edit] Software for commons

Check out this software to upload files directly to commons. Its good. http://tiredbrain.com/wikimedia/commonplace  =Nichalp (talkcontribs)= 15:22, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Yes sure Ancient Indian science and technology

Firstly, I would like to say a big hello to you. And, sure, I was myself thinking of that, after seeing similar remarks abt some other articles, in some places in wikipedia. Kindly move the article, please. And, in case, you are online, plz send me a reply. I am online for 10/15 more minutes. Thanks. I also request you to give me suggestions. ok.--Bhadani 19:32, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Help required

As you might be aware, Tamil people is now a FA. However, User:Taxman pointed out an important missing section, Cuisine. Can you help with that at Talk:Tamil people#Cuisine? -- Sundar (talkcontribs) 05:04, May 26, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Missing?

Hi --> The Indian wikipedian assoc. is missing a valuable contributor. =Nichalp (Talk)= 18:52, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)

Nice to see an edit from you. User:Nichalp/sg July 6, 2005 12:19 (UTC)
Welcome back. You are in time for the drive towards Chennai FAC. -- Sundar \talk \contribs July 6, 2005 12:48 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm back after a too-long hiatus (long story). Won't be as prolific as before with my edits though. Anyway, what's up with the new images on the Chennai page? Many of them seem to be of dubious origin (including some apparently taken from the website of 'The Hindu'). -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs July 6, 2005 23:47 (UTC)

Great to have you back. I see you're editing rather early in the morning IST. I got some of your pet projects to FA status. Indian Railways, [{Rail transport in India]] and the List of Indian districts. The Flag of India is up on FAC and I guess with a little tweaking Chennai can be improved. Your flag code was a little incorrect. The chakra is 75% the width of the white band. Could you upload a newer one with the current saffron and green HTML colours? Thanks. User:Nichalp/sg July 7, 2005 07:55 (UTC)

[edit] Chennai

Hi Brhaspati. I understand your frustration. Shall we take up Chennai and bring it up to FA status in one sitting? I'm sure Nichalp would also help. We can together deal with the newbies who don't understand the license issues etc. I don't want your effort to be wasted. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:16, July 21, 2005 (UTC)

That's a nice thought on your part. I should be able to edit through part of next week (Jul 25 to Jul 31). Tell me what time is suitable for you and Nichalp. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 07:51, July 24, 2005 (UTC)
I'm sorry that I missed this message. Nichalp has made a major upgrade to the article. Shall we edit it today? -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:20, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

Hey! Congratulations. Chennai has been featured on the Front Page today (21st December, 2005). Congratulations again and many thanks for the brilliant page that Chennai is --Chandrachoodan Gopalakrishnan

[edit] refining new goals

who defines the Top level priority? looking at the history, it seems that you play a part. india's featured articles seem a little dry at the moment. there is a distinct lack of articles related to contemporary indian culture. what is there to show that india's culture is alive & kicking as opposed to stale & dead? even the page on mumbai shows little evidence of living culture. why isn't bollywood a Top level priority? i'd like the world to know more about modern india. for balance perhaps top priority show go to articles about; 'the changing attitudes to sex in india'. other Regional notice boards are more balanced. the irish are working on Father_Ted. the japanese on Education_in_Japan. U.S._Southern on Hurricane_Camille etc. what we need are more FAs that that would make an interesting Today's featured article. surely Top level priority should goto more articles with worldwide popular appeal to balance all the dry articles?
