Breeders' Cup Distaff
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Breeders' Cup Distaff is a Weight for Age Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares, 3 years old and up. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup. It is sponsored by the airline Emirates.
Distance : 1 1/4 miles (1984-87); 1 1/8 miles (1988-).
In 2006, tragedy struck when Pine Island had to be euthanized after breaking her left front ankle, exposing bone and thereby becoming prone to serious infection. This was the first time in a Breeders' Cup event since Go For Wand in 1990 that a horse was so severely injured it had to be put down. A second horse, Fleet Indian, also broke down in unrelated circumstances in the same race, but her ligament injury was much less severe. Though she will be retired from racing, she is expected to survive as a broodmare. Ironically, Pine Island and Fleet Indian were joint favorites to win the 2006 Distaff.
