"Breathe" was the first single off of Faith Hill's 1999 album, Breathe. The song was extremely successful in the United States, and became Hill's signature song.
The song, written by Stephanie Bentley and Holly Lamar, is an intense, melodic interior monologue which showcases Hill's control of the lower register of her voice.

[edit] Chart performance
Following the surprising top ten pop hit "This Kiss," it became apparent that Hill possessed crossover appeal. In November of 1999, "Breathe" was released to Country and Pop radio and immediately caught popularity. It spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Country Singles chart, 17 weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary chart, one week at number one on the Adult Top 40 chart, and number two on the Hot 100 weekly survey.
Even though "Breathe" never made it to #1 on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart, it was on the chart for 53 weeks, which was good enough for Billboard to rank it as the number one Hot 100 hit of the year 2000. It was only the second song in the history of the Hot 100 to be named the number one single of the year without making it to #1 on any of the weekly surveys; the first was "Wooly Bully" by Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs, which was the number one song of the year 1965.
