Breakaway is the hugely successful Grammy Award-winning second album by Kelly Clarkson released on November 30, 2004 (see 2004 in music). It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 album chart with sales of 250,000 units. After spending 61 consecutive weeks in the top twenty of the U.S. Albums Chart, Breakaway descended to number twenty-four. It is only the fourth album in history to stay in the top 20 consecutively for a year. It then remained in the top 30 for 13 more weeks, making it in the top 30 for 74 consecutive weeks. It spent an impressive 103 weeks in the Billboard 200 (as of November 23, 2006). It was certified six times platinum in November 2006 for shipments of over six million copies (5,578,101 sold)[1] in the U.S and 10 million copies worldwide. The first four singles from the album reached the top ten of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, with the fifth single peaking at #12. Currently, all five singles released have sold over 4.75 million downloads combined.
At the 2006 Grammys, Breakaway was named Best Pop Vocal Album and the single "Since U Been Gone" was named Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
The album ended 2006 as the 15th best selling album in the United Kingdom, with sales over the 501,000 copies.[1]

[edit] Singles
- "Breakaway" is the first single from the album in the US and Australasia, and the fifth single in the UK. It originally appeared on the soundtrack to The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. A departure from the pop and soul Clarkson had become known for, the song was co-written in part by fellow singer Avril Lavigne. It peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached the top ten of more than ten Billboard charts (including twenty-one non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart). In Canada, the song was also extremely popular, peaking at number three. It has sold over 800,000 downloads to date.
- "Since U Been Gone" is the second single from the album, but the first in the UK. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and came in at number 4 on the 2005 year end chart. It is now Clarkson's most successful single in radio and sales terms; it has sold over 1,500,000 digital downloads in the U.S. It reached number one on several Billboard charts, and topped the Canadian charts for two weeks. It peaked at number 3 on the Australian ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart and was certfied Platinum in 2005 with sales of 70,000+. The RIAA certified the track Gold for 500,000 ringtones sold on June 14, 2006.
- "Behind These Hazel Eyes" is the third single from the album in the US and the second in the UK. The song continued the streak of extremely popular releases from Clarkson. It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and came in at number 10 on the 2005 year end charts. It peaked at number 6 on the Australian ARIA Top 50 Singles Charts and it also reached number four on the Canadian charts. It has sold over 1,000,000 downloads to date. It experienced great success on the Hot AC format, peaking at #1. "Behind These Hazel Eyes" finished as one of Clarkson's three songs in the Top 5 Year End Pop 100 songs. "Hazel Eyes" peaked at #1 on the Billboard Recurrents chart, and its music video remains one of the most beloved by fans.
- "Because of You" (2005) (file info) — play in browser (beta)
- At the age of sixteen, Clarkson wrote the lyrics to this song to cope with her emotional pain. The later composition would result in the use of the piano and a full orchestral arrangement.

- "Because of You" is the fourth single from the album - third in UK. The song debuted at number ninety-nine on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 3, 2005, and reached its peak position of number seven on November 10, 2005. It has sold over 850,000 downloads. It also debuted and peaked at number four on the Australian ARIA Top 50 Singles Charts and was certfied Gold in 2005 with sales of 35,000+. The track also did exceptionally well in Canada, peaking at #2 and staying within the top 20 for twenty-seven consecutive weeks. Over one year after its release to radio in Canada, it is still on the top 100 airplay chart, a rare feat accomplished by only a handful of artists.
- "Walk Away" is Clarkson's fifth single release from her album, having debuted at number ninety-seven on the Billboard Hot 100, a week before its original January 17, 2006 release date. The tune debuted on the Canadian charts the following week at #100. The single peaked at #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and at #4 in Canada. "Walk Away" was released on March 6th, 2006 in the UK as the fourth single and hit #21. In Australia, the single experienced similar success, reaching #27. Over 625,000 downloads have been sold.
[edit] Non-official singles
- "Gone" Although never officially released as a single, Top 40 radio stations began playing the song around November 2005, and it gained significant airplay on such stations as New York's Z100, Boston's Kiss 108 and Atlanta's Q100. Because of this, "Gone" managed to chart on the Pop 100 Airplay at #41 and the Pop 100 at #77. "Gone" has a Spanish version called "Me Voy" (I Leave) sung by Mexican pop band RBD.
- "Addicted" Another song never officially released. Although it was rumored that it would be the fifth or sixth single, it never saw release. Clarkson has stated that her next single will be from her next album.
