Brazil is the world's fourth largest market for beer with over 74 million barrels produced in 2002. Annual consumption per head exceeds 50 litres.

The tradition of brewing in Brazil dates back to European immigration in the early nineteenth century. Beer is brewed from the very south of Brazil where there are many German immigrants brewing traditional German style lagers to the mouth of the Amazon up in the north at Belém where the Cerpa brewery can be found.

The majority of the market (approximately 83%) belongs to Inbev, the owner of the brands Brahma, Antarctica, Bohemia and Skol. Brazil's largest brewer was formed from the merger of the two biggest brands Brahma and Antarctica. In 2005, Ambev merged with Belgium's Interbrew (Stella Artois, Becks, Staropramen and many others) to form the world's largest brewer now known as Inbev. After the merge, Primo Schincariol became the largest Brazilian-owned brewery in the country.
In 2002, Molson Coors bought Brazil's second largest brewery Kaiser. In 2006, the Mexican FEMSA Cerveza acquired 68% of Kaiser Brewery from Molson Coors.
There are a number of microbreweries in Brazil, the emergence of which is a relatively recent phenomenon. Over the past decade or so Brazil has imported more and more brands of beer from Europe and the USA. These imports are more expensive than locally brewed beers.

In the Brazilian Carnival period there is an explosion in consumption. In these 7 days more beer is consumed than the total for the rest of the year. In November with the approach of summer, the manufacture and investment in marketing triples.
