The first Brazilians to establish in North America arrived in New Amsterdam in , coming from Recife, fleeing religious persecution for being jews.

There are an estimated 750,000 Brazilians living in the United States. Major concentrations are in New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and California.

West 46th St has historically been a commercial center for Brazilians living or visiting New York City. A few years ago the street was officially titled "Little Brazil street" by the city.

A disporportional number of Brazilians who have emigrated to the U.S. came from the town of Governador Valadares, in the state of Minas Gerais.
