[edit] History

Carlile learned to play piano in her early teens, singing harmonies to Elvis Presley songs. She began to learn to play the guitar at 17. She joined up with Tim and Phil Hanseroth of her current (2006) band while recording some of her early indie CDs. She signed with Columbia in 2004. Her band has since been enhanced with a new drummer known as Coach, and most recently a cellist named Josh Neuman. Her debut CD was recorded in the living room of her log cabin under production of John Goodmanson, and was released in 2005.

Rolling Stone named her one of their "10 Artists to Watch in 2005".

Her 2006 tour included opening for musicians such as Chris Isaak, Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, Johnny Lang, Jamie Cullum, and Ray LaMontagne, as well as headlining several shows. Recorded radio shows at NPR, KCRW, and a recorded live concert for XPN have made much of her live music available on the internet.

In 2006, she began recording her next album with producer and musician T Bone Burnett. She has announced that this album will include some songs she wrote while on tour, including "Downpour", a song that has become a live favorite.

She often played music and sang with her musical family, and cites her grandmother as one of her important teachers. Her lifelong dream of performing at the Grand Ole Opry was fulfilled when she performed with her mother at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
