Brande municipality

Brande is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Ringkøbing on the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 188 km², and has a total population of 8,822 (2005). Its mayor is Preben Christensen.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Brande.

Neighboring municipalities are Give to the southeast, Nørre-Snede to the northeast, Herning to the north, Aaskov to the west, and Grindsted to the south.

The municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that merged a number of existing parishes:

  • Blåhøj Parish
  • Brande Parish

By January 1, 2007 Brande municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Ikast and Nørre-Snede municipalities to form the new Ikast-Brande municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 768 km² and a total population of 39,371 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
