As of 2006, the current headmaster is Mr. David Swanton. Braintree's school colors are blue and white and their school and athletic teams claim the nickname of "The Wamps." It is currently held by the school that the name is derived from the Massachusetts Indian Nation Chief Sachem known as Wampatuck, meaning "White Goose". However, it is in historical record that the school's nickname was originally derived from the name "Wampanoag," a Native American tribe historically based in the South Shore of Massachusetts. It is unsure why in recent years it has been altered to represent "Wampatuck," especially due to the fact that the alternate spelling of that particular name, "Wompatuck," is the one most often used in the area (the school's nickname has always been spelled with an "a".) This misnomer likely arose due to the common abbreviation of "Wamp" being the only nickname commonly used in connection with the school. No matter what the source of the nickname itself is, concerns over political correctness with the use of a Native American name have arisen, with some consideration of changing the mascot to a Boxing Kangaroo.
