BR standard class 6
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British Railways's standard class 6 otherwise known as the Clan class was a class of steam locomotive. Ten examples were built and whilst popular opinion is that they were successful a further 15 were cancelled.
The locomotives were named after Scottish clans:
- 72000 Clan Buchanan
- 72001 Clan Cameron
- 72002 Clan Campbell
- 72003 Clan Fraser
- 72004 Clan Macdonald
- 72005 Clan Macgregor
- 72006 Clan Mackenzie
- 72007 Clan Mackintosh
- 72008 Clan Macleod
- 72009 Clan Stewart
In addition, the following names were chosen for the next five which were to be based in the Southern Region:
- 72010 Hengist
- 72011 Horsa
- 72012 Canute
- 72013 Widfire
- 72014 Firebrand
The remaining ten cancelled locomotives were to be named after more Scottish clans.
The arrangement consisted of a boiler of a standard class 7 with smaller cylinders and other modifications to save weight and hence increase route availability. Intended for use in Scotland, where route availability was lower, they were poor performers and were not as good as the LMS black fives. As a result, they were transferred south and quickly scrapped.
[edit] Preservation
None has survived. However, a small start has been made in constructing a new locomotive of the missing 15 batch, 72010 Hengist at the Swanage Railway. That would be the 1000th locomotive to be built to a BR standard design.
