Boy Meets Boy (novel)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boy Meets Boy is a novel written by David Levithan. It centers around a gay boy, Paul, but it is less a book about sexuality, and more a high school romance where the main character happens to be gay. The book shows the trials and tribulations of teenage romance and emphasises that it is no different for gay people than straight people.

The book invented the word "literogratumerriment" which means "thank you for the words".

Paul Paul is a high school sophomore who is gay. He has always known he was gay, ever since his kindergarten teacher told him so, and is wonderfully happy in this fact. He is hopelessly in love with Noah.

Noah Noah is The Boy. He's the one Paul is totally into, and wishes was totally into him. He's a senior who recently moved to the town, whose parents are away often on business trips, leaving him and his sister Claudia home alone. Noah likes Paul well enough, but he's been hurt hard in the past, and he's wary of being hurt again. He likes art a lot, especially photography and painting. His room has a studio where he goes to "paint the music" and he takes Paul up there to paint on one of their dates.

Joni: Joni has been Paul's best friend since at least second grade, and was the first person he came out to besides his parents. She has been dating Ted off and on since the fifth grade, but during the course of the book she has dumped him for a final time and is going out with Chuck.

Tony Tony is Paul's other best friend. They met in the city where they both were looking for the same book, and re-met on the train where they both wound up thinking the same guy was cute. Tony kept his homosexuality from his parents for as long as he could, but they eventually found out and freaked out. He is only allowed to go and hang out with Paul and Joni by pretending to be on a date with Joni, or feeding Paul and Joni bible tales to appease his parents. By the end of the book, he confronts his parents about his limits on his freedoms, and manages to get more permessivness out of them.

Kyle Kyle is Paul's ex-boyfriend who can't decide if he's gay, straight or whatever. He's most famous for saying the line "My aunt died this weekend and I decided that we should be together." Kyle's hobbies include: making life difficult for Paul, being indecisive and whisy washy, being excessively awkward, making life difficult for Paul, and long walks on the beach.

[edit] Secondary Characters

Infinite Darlene Infinite Darlene is a drag queen who is both the school's star quarterback and homecoming queen. She has a larger than life personality, and spreads gossip like wildfire. She's always there to lend an ear, a chocolate bar, or some support to her friends, including Noah. She rejected Chuck when he fell in love with her, and she is bitter enimies with Trilby Pope. Her name as a male was Daryl Heisenberg. She's the best character in the whole book. The end.

Ted Ted is Joni's on again and off again boyfriend. As the book opens, they have just turned off for the eleventh time, and dating for the twelfth time is imminent. He's nice enough, but a bit oblivious at times, and is extremely annoyed at Chuck for dating 'his' girl.
