BoyChat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BoyChat is an Internet forum for individuals who are attracted to underage boys. Founded in 1995 by "Kasper," the board is the most active member of the Free Spirits boylove coalition, with over 3200 registered posters.[1] Its posters -- who usually refer to themselves as "boylovers"[2] -- mostly use it for support and discussion of activism or topics related to boys and life as a pedophile or an ephebophile. BoyChat also aims to aid pedophiles and ephebophiles in accepting their attraction, arguing that "people who have bottled-up emotions are dangerous to themselves and others."[3]

Anyone who follows BoyChat's seven rules may post, including those who are hostile to pedophiles or ephebophiles. A team of moderators known as "cogs" moderate the board, enforcing the seven rules in order to ensure the continued existence and legality of the board as well as the privacy of its posters.

[edit] Controversy - 1995 through Summer 2006

The controversial content on BoyChat causes its legal status to be called into question on a regular basis[4][5] . It is generally accepted that BoyChat is monitored by several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the RCMP. Law enforcement officials have never taken any action against BoyChat or its web hosts. Some members of BoyChat have been linked to criminal activity; the BoyChat FAQ acknowledges that several registered members have at some point been imprisoned on charges of child sexual abuse or possession of child pornography.[6]

Between 1995 and 1997, web hosting services routinely booted BoyChat off the Internet[7]. In 1997, BoyChat found stable hosting with the now-defunct ISP Phix.net, where it stayed until Phix's upstream ordered it disconnected in April 2001 [citation needed]. In June, BoyChat found hosting with Epifora[8], a Canadian ISP created by FreeSpirits members in order to host websites for pedophiles and ephebophiles, as stated by Epifora founder John White. [citation needed].

[edit] Controversy - Fall 2006 to date

On November 3, 2006, BoyChat's ISP, Epifora, was disconnected[9][10] from the MCI-Canada[11] backbone after Perverted-Justice.com declared MCI-Canada's American parent company, Verizon, to be a "Corporate Sex Offender[12]." This label was invented by Perverted-Justice.com to designate any company that allegedly facilitates pedophile activism. The threat of negative publicity associated with being declared a "Corporate Sex Offender" has been very effective in obtaining compliance from some of the designated companies. BoyChat was subsequently dropped by two more ISPs [13][14] [citation needed] [non-blog citations needed] after campaigns by Perverted-Justice.com. These campaigns were based on their claims that BoyChat exists for the purpose of advocating child sexual abuse and encouraging illegal activity.[15] These claims led to the disconnection of BoyChat for Terms of Service violations.

As of December 2006, BoyChat is on its 3rd IP address since MCI-Canada disconnected its upstream provider. It is currently being hosted in Russia.

[edit] BoyChat and Net Neutrality

On October 25, the Canadian Interenet Policy and Public Interest Clinic[16] posted a story[17] about the impending action of MCI-Canada.

Slashdot also posted an article[18] about the 2006 MCI termination order.
