Box Hill Central
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Box Hill Central in Box Hill, Victoria, Australia is a medium-sized shopping centre owned by the Centro Properties Group, who acquired it in 2000. It has been officially renamed to Centro Box Hill, but many still refer to it as Box Hill Central. It was built in the mid 1980's when the old railway station and level crossing was removed, and Market and Main Streets were closed to traffic. It was refurbished in 1998.
The centre has a gross lettable area of 24,390 square metres and is constructed on 36,800 square metres of land. It has a total of 105 stores and an annual turnover of $92.9 million. It is located within a short distance of several Box Hill Institute of TAFE campuses and as such is frequented by many students. It is also strongly associated with the Asian (and in particular Chinese) community.

[edit] Major Stores
The two larest stores are the Safeway Supermarket and Target department store. They have been there since Box Hill Central opened. There is also a food court.
[edit] Public transport
Box Hill Central is built on top of the underground Box Hill station and has a major bus interchange on the roof of the centre.
[edit] Fresh food market
Unusually, the centre has a large, indoor, fresh food market towards the back of the centre, which is a popular attraction. Part of the reason for this is that in 1895, a large market was opened next to the station.
