Bowsher High School (Toledo, Ohio)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bowsher High School was constructed at the intersection of Glanzman and Detroit in Toledo, Ohio. It is also known as E. L. Bowsher High School. It is part of the Toledo Public Schools. The school opened in 1962, and is due to be replaced with a new structure about a mile away, at the corner of Detroit and Arlington. It is home to the Rebels, well over a thousand students and a member of Toledo Public Schools. The name "Rebels" has an interesting backstory to it. Given the school's location in South Toledo and the fact that army of the Confederate States of America were called rebels, the name was chosen. The mascot is a horseman named "Rowdy" and the colors are red and Colombia blue. In 1992, support groups met to discuss the rebel flag and the school song, "Dixie". Appearently, there was some controversy over the use of the flag and the song. The points agreed on include the following: the name "Rebels" would be retained, the horseman will continue to be the mascot with a slight modification, the rebel flag will not be used in the school or school events, and the colors remain the same. In June 1993, a new fight song was adopted.
