Boulder High School was founded in 1875, making it the first high school in Colorado (hence the slogan "Still the First"). The school is situated in the heart of Boulder along the Boulder Creek and a block away from Boulder's famous Pearl Street Mall. Boulder High School has a strong academic reputation that is highlighted by one of the most extensive Advanced Placement programs in the state, allowing students to take college-level coursework (and earn college-level credit for their labors). Because of its proximity to the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU), many students are given the opportunity to take courses at CU that are not available at the high school, paid for by the local school district (Boulder Valley School District).
The mascot of Boulder High is the panther and BHS participates with the best schools in the state in the 5A athletic conference. Boulder High School has produced many great athletes, many of whom have continued on to participate in NCAA Division I athletic programs.
In 1933, the bulk of the modern building as we see it was built as a Civilian Conservation Corps project during the great depression. Boulder's rival school is Fairview High School, also in Boulder. Currently by means of football, the record is 3 years in a row of Fairview winning the town over Boulder.
Boulder High's Academic Decathlon team has represented Colorado at the national competition for the past six years, and finished 2nd at the National Science Bowl in 2002.
Boulder High's unique theater department tends to choose shows that one would not generally see at a high school. Recent productions include Urinetown: the Musical, Clue, Chicago: the Musical, and Where I'm From, a show written by the students themselves examining social issues seen through the eyes of high schoolers.
