Bot status request for User:Margosbot

I'm inserting interwiki links on Polish wikipedia. Now it's time to put them into en wikipedia. I've prepared bot to do this job. As soon as I get permission I'll start inserting interwiki. Margospl 21:44, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Interwiki guidelines

  • Halló! Some months ago I started to search informations about where to insert and how to sort interlanguage links at various Wikipedias. I thing that information should be available in a central place, as at the "embassies" linked to en:Wikipedia:Embassy.
  • See what I have "collected" so far at commons:User:Gangleri/sandbox/Template:Interwiki guidelines. Would be happy if you would add information about [[:en:]] if your community has already decided about this. Thanks in advance! Best regards Gangleri | Th | T 01:09, 2005 Apr 20 (UTC)

Chobot

I request a permission for the bot flag of Chobot. It is an interwiki-bot running in korean wikipedia. I want to fix backlink between ko&en wikipedias. -- ChongDae 15:47, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but with the recent events of certain Interwiki bots, I must ask that you run your bot without the flag temporarily for one week. I need to see a sample of contributions under that account to determine whether or not the bot is doing an accurate job of what it is suppose to do. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:20, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Does it mean that I can run Chobot withot the bot status? Then, please name Chobot in Wikipedia:Bots#Bots_running_without_a_flag. I'm using pywikipedia program and it don't allow to login in en if the bot is not named there. (Of course, I can change the source, if permitted.) -- ChongDae 15:35, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

It will still run, that is merely a warning notice. I'm giving you permission to run your bot on User:Chobot for a duration of a week. By doing that, at least the RC patrol can monitor your bot for awhile. Modifying the source slightly to slow down the bot's edits further, if possible. Then I'll look over the bot's contributions to see if did anything bad. What I am particularly concerned is that your bot doesn't do something weird like remove the valid interwiki links just like User:FlaBot. No one caught User:FlaBot's errors until it was too late... -- AllyUnion (talk) 23:50, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

Now it runs. First it tries to add ko: links for numbers. During the jobs, it tries to remove la: links. la:1 is linked to en:1 (number). But the 'la' page is about years, not numbers. -- ChongDae 14:53, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

It shouldn't be touching them anyway. Furthermore, I checked the Latin page. That is the page about the number and the year 1. Please restrict it from removing other Wikipedia language links. It should only modify ko: or add ko:. -- AllyUnion (talk) 04:26, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
This bot stop running at 14:21, 17 May 2005 (UTC). Not approved for bot status until it has ran a full test run for one week. -- AllyUnion (talk) 10:58, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Chobot runs a month already. Please check the log and aprove the bot status. -- ChongDae 14:01, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My objection was that you can apply for it once it ran for a full week. Since it did, I no longer have any objections. -- AllyUnion (talk) 09:35, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

FlaBot

There is nobody who set Backlinks from German to English. As a German Interwiki-Bot-Operator i ask for Bot status for User:FlaBot. --FlaBot 16:30, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Can you please translate your userpage? Thanks. -- AllyUnion (talk) 10:34, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I've added a user page for the bot and marked it as a bot. Please let me know if there are any objections to this. Angela. 15:16, Apr 29, 2005 (UTC)

FlaBot has been blocked due to a mistake between zh: interwiki links and zh-min-nan: interwiki links. -- AllyUnion (talk) 00:24, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

See Doraemon for an example. -- AllyUnion (talk) 13:13, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

This bot has made dozens of reported mistakes of several varieties (as seen on its en and de talk pages) and probably hundreds of mistakes no one caught or bothered to report. It is extremely buggy. — Olathe 17:18, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

someone claimed in the edit reason of an edit to wikipedia:bots that this bot was "never approved for a bot flag" yet accoring to its user-talk page its bot flag was removed. what exactly is going on? Plugwash 18:20, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
It was approved because there was no objection made on this page for at least 7 days after the request was listed here. However, since there was objection after the bot flag was given, it was removed. Angela. 16:49, May 15, 2005 (UTC)
Had a lot of privat work in teh last days. I dont think that the bot is making nonesence. Perhaps the en-rules are different from the rules in other languages. Ok lets check it. A nother Problem might be that the warnfiles running on the wiki a 1-2 week old and a lot of this have changed in the

last days. ok thats a thing to check an to change .. and i think hat SOMETIMES the Wiki send not the LAST version of the page. So i wwould be pse if the status is set back. I will only make 100 Edits a day. Save the logging for every day and will everyone can call me. User Flacus / Flabot

obsolete languages in the bot :

'sh' -> 'hr'
'dk':'da',
'minnan':'zh-min-nan',
'nb':'no',
'jp':'ja',
'tokipona':'none',
'zh-tw':'zh',
'zh-cn':'zh'

That does not explain why it removed the 'zh' link on Doraemon. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:50, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps there is no zh-articel in the wiki. Another big problem. My account is call big-f small-l small-a big-b small-o small-t .. and the damage was made with the account big-f big-i small-a big-b small-o small-t. Thats NOT my account but it look like. I perhaps somebody wanted to stop me. --84.169.233.250 23:15, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It is under your account, the contribution links to your account, and I am not making any mistake. I can read Chinese, and I know that was a valid link. If you can't read Chinese, don't tell me that there's no valid link. If you really want me to give you my proof, here it is: [1]. That is your account. Not some impersonator. There is a Doraemon article on the Chinese Wikipedia, see zh:哆啦A梦. Your bot has contributions that say, "Removing" interwiki links. So far, the interwiki link bots I see on the Wikipedia do not remove interwiki links. They only modify. If you'd like to continue run your interwiki link bot, I will permit you to run your bot for adding links between the German (de:) Wikipedia and the English Wikipedia since you understand German and English to some extent to actually operate a bot between the two Wikipedias. Furthermore, it is standard bot policy to create a normal user account for yourself, and one for your bot. You should not be making and posting replies under User:FlaBot. The bot status flag is to be used only when bot work is done and only should be doing bot work. It gets confusing when you are editing articles or posting comments to replies when you have the bot status flag. -- AllyUnion (talk) 09:50, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
ok if your policy is this way i will change. Did you switch off my bot-status for all wikis ? my bot-status in de,af,he also moved away. can ypou pse undo it. To get better Interwiki i wrote an interface for de<->en Interwiki. So i need back bot status. I will stop removing links from the en-wiki. --Flacus 12:03, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
No, I did not. I'm only an administrator here. You may run the bot without the status flag so that people may track your changes. You can put "Interwiki Bot Testing". -- AllyUnion (talk) 06:39, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
OK if i am allowed to run it. Pse unblock by FlaBot account and my ips. --Flacus 06:40, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Does anyone wish to support Flacus's bot to be run? If you can get support someone else from the community, you may trial run your bot, however I am not personally in support at this time. -- AllyUnion (talk) 22:52, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

i have great support from Head and other developers from the pythonbot. I have a lot of experiance in botting in de,he,af wiki. my bot is running correctly with the last working version from cvs. I work for wiki. wrote a Interwiki-Link-Checker in my free time ... so dont block my from doing work.

--Flacus 03:40, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I'm admin at de: and one of the developers of the Python bot that Flacus is using. The mode has two modes: normal mode (interwiki.py) and no-validation mode (warnfile.py). In normal mode, the bot loads each page before doing any changes, so it's nearly bulletproof. In no-validation mode, the bot processes hints given by other bot operators or by Flacus' (great) interwiki tool, without re-checking (to reduce server load). The problem is that such warnfiles might be wrong or outdated; this is the reason why I personally never use warnfile mode.
I would suggest giving back bot status to Flacus if he promises not to let his interwiki bot run without re-validating the warnfiles. --Head 21:19, July 16, 2005 (UTC)
I feel that Flacus is only to be qualified to modify interwiki links between the English and German Wikipedias. I rather not he modify anything else other than the German Wikipedia interwiki link on the English Wikipedia, since he doesn't seem to understand any other language well. I will unblock FlaBot if he agrees to cooperate and that someone, preferably you, keep on eye on his bot. --AllyUnion (talk) 06:50, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
I talk to Head about the problems with the warnfile.py. With the new multi-language-wiki-live option of the interwiki.py the need to use warnfile.py is obsolete. I will never user that program. Will only use the interwiki.py with live checking bevor making any edit. --Flacus 22:33, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

request for Bot status

Please can you give bot status to user:RobotE. Up to now, I have been running mainly the interwiki bot from user:Ellywa, but I suspect this is rather annoying, although I did not get any complaints of users of en:Wikipedia (although I did get comments from de: and fr: wikipedia). On the NL wikipedia the bot RobotE is working regularly without problems for a long time. You can ask references to User:Andre Engels who knows me well, if required. Thanks, Ellywa 10:25, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

So what kind of interwiki links are we talking about? Be specific; otherwise we don't know exactly what it's restrictions. -- AllyUnion (talk) 10:56, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
I perhaps do not understand your question correctly, but I mean additional or new links generated from the warnfiles which are output of the interwiki bot which I am mainly running on NL wikipedia. If you want to see some hundreds or thousands of examples already made by this bot from my ordinary account, please note my contributions: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=Ellywa . Nobody commented yet on these changes. Ellywa 12:36, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
Let me rephrase my question. On which specific interwiki links of which languages are you planning to add or modify on the English Wikipedia? Example: I plan to only add or modify interwiki links to and from the Chinese (zh) Wikipedia. -- AllyUnion (talk) 07:50, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
I plan to modify or add all interwiki links to all possible languages which are wrong or which are missing in articles on English wikipedia, using warnfiles exported by the interwiki bot used to link articles from the Dutch wikipedia, on which I am a sysop and experienced contributor. Ellywa 08:35, 22 May 2005 (UTC)
And you are certain this will not delete interwiki links? -- AllyUnion (talk) 05:13, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
The bot deletes links only if they do not exist, and are not redirected in the other language. Ellywa 08:18, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
I am going to presume you mean: IF page IN other language Wikipedia DOES NOT EXIST AND IF page IN other language Wikipedia IS NOT A redirect, THEN remove interwiki link. I approve the running of this bot immediately. It may apply for bot status after one week from the 24th. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:14, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
It's now one week from the 24th, so I've made RobotE a bot. If there are any problems with this, please explain at m:requests for permissions. Angela. 09:37, May 31, 2005 (UTC)

Interwiki Bot Policy Proposal

Recently, there has been several requests from various people to run interwiki bots. While such use is praised and accepted without comment, apparently one bot has caused disasterous results... removing several pages' interwiki links when it should not have. My proposal does not change the fact that anyone who wishs to run such a bot must request permission to do so at Wikipedia talk:Bots, but that a person who runs an interwiki bot should have a grasp of the language in which they are linking to and from. The reason behind this is that a person who runs an interwiki bot should be responsible enough to understand whether or not the interwiki linking that is being performed is done correctly and that if they are running it automatically (without user intervention) that the person who is running it should review the edits of the bot periodically. For example, if I wanted to run an interwiki linking bot between the Chinese (zh) Wikipedia and the English (en) Wikipedia, I should be able to read and understand Chinese to a reasonable degree. Likewise for English.

I'm sorry, but if you don't understand English enough to understand that your bot is breaking pages and people are complaining about it on your user talk page, then you shouldn't be running a bot. Same goes for the other languages you're running the bot on. The only exception that I'd give this rule is if your bot is merely going to all the other Wikipedias using the interwiki links and making certain that the interwiki linking is the same on all the pages. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:12, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

To be specific in what I mean, I will explain by an example:

Your bot visits en:Star Trek. It looks at the interwiki links, then visits:

Then on each one of those pages, makes certain that they have all the interwiki links found on en:Star Trek. Furthermore, your bot attempts to find interwiki links on these pages not found on en:Star Trek. It then creates a "master list" and makes certain that all the interwiki links are the same on all the language Wikipedias it has visited.

Basically, an interwiki linking bot shouldn't be removing interwiki links period. Modifying yes, but perferably under manual control by a person who understands both languages from which he or she is modifying. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:12, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely. -- Beland 19:59, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
I agree completely. Thryduulf 00:48, 22 May 2005 (UTC)
I agree too. Surely we can have a rogue bot blocked until things have been straigthened out with the user who runs it? 131.211.210.13 08:07, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
Certainly. However, I am attempting to slow down the number of interwiki bot requests and making sure that the only people requesting to do so are the people who understand what the heck they are doing. Not the people who think they are helping by doing something useful by guessing. (Although the help is appreciated, it seems to do more harm than good sometimes.) -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:24, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Bot flag for Jumbuck

I'd like to get a bot flag for Jumbuck, it has 5579 edits (~13500 on all projects combined) and aside from some encoding problems at the start of its operations has performed flawlessly. I'd like to get permission to continue interwiki work as well as text replacements if need be (such as converting {{msg:}} to {{}} and other things like that. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 14:41, 2005 Jun 22 (UTC)

I approve. --AllyUnion (talk) 06:52, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Bot status request for User:YurikBot

Hi. I would like to receive permission to run my bot on English wikipedia. I am one of the developers of the PyWikipediaBot framework, primarily working with interwikies. My largest contribution is to the ru: site (over 16000 changes by bot alone) (see ru:User:YurikBot, en:User:YurikBot)

I am about to submit a change to the framework that would significantly reduce server load. At present, when an interwiki bot runs on a site, it follows every available interwiki, resolves them, and updates the user's site. Unfortunately, all that effort of resolving and querying multi-language servers goes to waste, because other users on all sites have to go through the same process. Thus, to solve one interwiki with N links, currently each user runs N queries + 1 update, thus its N*(N+1) server hits! My code will significantly reduce this by updating all sites the user has registered for (in case user is registered everywhere, that's total of N queries + N updates!)

My current tests on en: are always one page at a time (manual runs). The code has been stabilized, although i am still testing it on various sites. Thanks! --Yurik 4 July 2005 16:10 (UTC)

Approved for running one week. If no complaints are made at this page, bot's talk page or bot's owner's talk page, then may apply for bot status. --AllyUnion (talk) 07:14, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

ZwoBot

Hi, I'm running ZwoBot to place interwiki links on de:. If it encounters missing or incorrect links on en:, it will also fix them.

If someone wants it to have the bot flag set, and nobody objects that, I can request that flag on meta.

P.S.: It would be nice if an admin could move User:Zwobot (vandal account) to User:ZwoBot. --Head 10:37, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Approved for running one week. If no complaints are made at this page, bot's talk page or bot's owner's talk page, then may apply for bot status. --AllyUnion (talk) 07:15, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

CyeZBot

I'd like to request botstatus for User:CyeZBot. It is used for placing interwiki's on nl:, if it encounters incorrect links on other wikipedia's it will also try to fix those if I have a registered account there. CyeZ 12:13, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Approved for running to modify interwiki links between en and nl for one week. If no complaints are made at this page, bot's talk page or bot's owner's talk page, then may apply for bot status. --AllyUnion (talk) 07:19, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

User:Bota47

I'm running interwikibot User:Bota47 at cswiki. It is also adding links here on enwiki --Li-sung 19:55, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Approved for test run for one week. Only permitted to run between cs: and en: --AllyUnion (talk) 05:06, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

MoriBot

Hi, I've been running the interwiki.py using MoriBot a couple of times since yesterday, but failed to follow the rules at en:. I'm sorry. I will not run the bot again until explicitly allowed. Any comments please on nl:User talk:Moribunt. Regards, Moribunt 07:44, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

You'll have to specify what your bot's purpose is for. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:20, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

Lt-wiki-bot

I would like to run bot Lt-wiki-bot, which would place interwiki links using warnfile generated by Lithuanian wikipedia bot Lang-bot-as). If noone disagree, I would like to request bot-status for this bot. Knutux 06:31, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

Approved for testing for one week, if no one disapproves within one week, may apply for bot status. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:39, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

M7bot

I would like to run bot M7bot, which would place interwiki links for the Wikipedia in Italian language, as already the bot it:M7bot does. The bot operation shall always be checked through both visually and by log examination. I would also like to request bot-status for this bot. M7it (M7) 12:35, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

Approved for testing for one week, if no one disapproves within one week, may apply for bot status --AllyUnion (talk) 17:57, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

LeonardoRob0t

I am a portuguese wikipedian, run interwiki links with LeonardoRob0t in several other wikipedias and want to use in wikipedia:en. Wait to be approved, thanks --Leonardo Gregianin 21:17, 17 August 2005 (UTC).

Can you list which Wikipedias you plan to run this bot with? Thank you. --AllyUnion (talk) 21:47, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
The bot is with a new option, to edit at the same time several wikipedia. I will bind articles in da, de, en, es, fr, it, ja, la, nl, pl, pt, sv, zh and future others. --Leonardo Gregianin 23:11, 17 August 2005 (UTC).
This is nothing against you in particular, but it has been proposed on this page that you should reasonably understand the majority of those languages before you place interwiki links. The only reason behind that is to ensure the accuracy of your bot, since only a few Wikipedians can be able to perform such a task. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:23, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
I do not need to know that Rhythm is the same that 节奏 in Chinese or リズム in Japonese, or that Skirt and dress link to Saia in Portuguese and Rock (Kleidung) in Deutsch link to Portuguese. Or that 昆虫. I do not need to know, but bot knows alone. --Leonardo Gregianin 13:05, 20 August 2005 (UTC).
You do need to know. Otherwise, how can you be sure your bot is functioning correctly? --Carnildo 05:36, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
You know as function interwiki bots? LeonardoGregianin 14:26, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Computers are not infallible, nor are humans. If you can not read the other languages, you can not assume the bot is always correct. --AllyUnion (talk) 05:10, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
