Born and Bred

Born and Bred is a light drama serial created by Chris Chibnall and Nigel McCrery, which appeared on BBC One from 2002 to 2005. It is set in the fictional Lancashire village of Ormston during the 1950s.

The series revolved around a small number of significant figures within the Ormston community. In the first episode, Doctor Arthur Gilder (played by James Bolam) tricks his son Tom (Michael French), who is also a doctor, into coming home to Ormston in order to revitalise his cottage hospital. Although initially unhappy at the deception, Tom accepts the challenge and brings the hospital under the auspices of the new National Health Service. Tom's wife Deborah (Jenna Russell) becomes chairman of the parish council. The hospital is usually the setting for one major plotline in each episode. Both Bolam and French later left the series, to be replaced by two new characters: Doctor Donald Newman (Richard Wilson) and Dr Nick Logan (Oliver Milburn). Richard Wilson received top billing for the final series in 2005.
