Boreray, North Uist
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Boreray (Scottish Gaelic: Boraraigh) is an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland which lies 2km north of North Uist.
The island was occupied from prehistoric times and through the 19th century there were over 100 people living there, but in 1923, the island was evacuated on the request of the islanders. One family stayed on but left in the 1960s; the single croft forming the north-east part of the island was reoccupied in 1999. The grazing rights for the remainder are leased to the crofters of the nearby island of Berneray.
