Borallon Correctional Centre is an Australian prison located in Ivan Lane, Borallon, Queensland, Australia approximately 15 minutes from Ipswich. The prison is accredited by the Correctional Education Association (CEA). It is the first facility outside the United States to achieve this distinction.
Borallon has also received ISO 9001 Quality Assurance certification, becoming the second prison in Australia to receive this certification. It was the first prison in the world to be endorsed to both CEA and ISO 9000 standards.
Whilst the prison buildings, equipment and property it is on are owned by the Queensland Government Department of Corrective Services, Borallon Correctional Centre is operated on behalf of the Department of Corrective Services by Management and Training Corporation an American Company who similarly runs many State Owned Correctional Facilities in the U.S.
Management and Training Corporation are responsible for the day to day running of the centre, financial management and the hiring of staff and must adhere to the Corrective Services Act 2000. Whilst they are not public servants, staff employed at Borallon Correctional Centre are afforded the same powers as their government prison counterparts with respect to the humane management of prisoners and are offered the same access to Departmental training as their government colleagues except Custodial Officer training which is conduct in-house at Borallon Correctional Centre. Borallon Correctional Centre employees are not able to transfer to another prison or Corrective Services Facility nor can they access any public service benefits as their state counterparts do. Borallon Correctional Centre employees do not/can not wear the Department of Corrective Services Uniform.
Prisoners within Borallon Correctional Centre are given the opportunity to engage in meaningful work as well as taking part in courses to address their offending behaviour, substance abuse, and afforded the opportunity to complete schooling, TAFE and university studies.
