Bombay, New York

Bombay is a town in Franklin County, New York, USA. The population was 1,192 at the 2000 census. The town was named after Bombay in India by an early settler.
The Town of Bombay is in the northwest part of the county, south of United States and Canada border.

Settlement began around 1805. The Town of Bombay was organized from part of the Town of Fort Covington in 1833.
In 1877, the town was devastated by a plague of grasshoppers, which consumed more than half of the field crops.

The St. Regis River flows through the northwest corner of the town. Part of the north town line is the international border of Quebec, defined by the St. Lawrence River, and the west town line is the border of St. Lawrence County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.0 km² (35.9 mi²). 92.7 km² (35.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.28%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,192 people, 483 households, and 327 families residing in the town. The population density was 12.9/km² (33.3/mi²). There were 562 housing units at an average density of 6.1/km² (15.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 82.89% White, 0.42% African American, 14.85% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.50% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.92% of the population.
There were 483 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $28,000, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $27,273 versus $26,029 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,710. About 16.4% of families and 20.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.3% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.

- Bombay -- A hamlet in the center of the town on Route 95.
- Hogansburg -- A hamlet in the northwest corner of the town on the bank of the St. Regis River. It was formerly called "St. Regis Mills" and "Grays Mills."
- Pike Creek -- a stream flowing into the St. Lawrence River.
- South Bombay -- A hamlet near the south town line on Route 95.
- St. Regis -- A hamlet in the north part of the town.
- St. Regis Mohawk Reservation -- The reservation is at the northern part of the town.
