Bolsa Família

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bolsa Família, roughly translated as "Family Stipend" or "Family Scholarship" in English, is a Brazilian governmental welfare program. It provides a cash benefit to poor and indigent Brazilian families, if their children attend school and the family uses the public health care system. It is the largest Conditional Cash Transfer program in the world.

The program was formed by combining Bolsa Escola, which was pioneered by Cristovam Buarque among others, with other cash transfer programs to reduce administrative cost. Bolsa Família includes a Fixed Benefit for the indigent and a Variable Benefit for the poor. It is now a centerpiece of President Lula's social policy, and is reputed to have played a role in his victory in the 2006 national elections.
