In written sources Bollnäs is traced from 1312, by a vicar named Ingemund who referred to it as Baldenaes which means "the large isthmus" and referring to the isthmus into a nearby lake.

The city of Bollnäs received its privileges in 1942 when the towns of Bollnäs and Björkhamre merged. Bollnäs is a station along the Northern Railline (Norra Stambanan) but has never served any higher purposes more than as a centre of trade for the surrounding lands.

The current size of municipality was created in 1974 with the reform then, when the Swedish city Bollnäs was merged with three smaller municipalities, and the "city" per se was abolished into the municipality.
