Boaz, Alabama

Boaz is a city in Marshall County, Alabama and partially in Etowah County, Alabama, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The city is named after the husband of Ruth, from the Book of Ruth in the Holy Bible. It is part of the 'Gadsden, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area'. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,411. According to the 2005 U.S. Census estimates, the city had a population of 7,893. [1] Boaz is nationally known as an outlet shopping destination. It is the "Shop 'til you drop" Capital of Alabama.On March 21, 2002, the last of five Boaz, Alabama police officer defendants, Timothy Hooks, is sentenced to 35 months in prison as the result of a civil rights investigation conducted by the Gadsden Resident Agency. The five officers were accused of racial profiling as they engaged in the targeting of Hispanic males for unlawful arrests and improper traffic stops. [2]

Boaz is located at 34°12′10″N, 86°9′38″W (34.202793, -86.160457)GR1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.7 km² (12.2 mi²). 31.6 km² (12.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.49%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,411 people, 3,155 households, and 2,085 families residing in the city. The population density was 234.5/km² (607.7/mi²). There were 3,468 housing units at an average density of 109.8/km² (284.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.50% White, 1.31% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.01% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 4.98% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,155 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,699, and the median income for a family was $34,018. Males had a median income of $29,504 versus $21,750 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,664. About 13.9% of families and 18.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.7% of those under age 18 and 25.4% of those age 65 or over.
