[edit] Plot summary

The series opens with Stoner trying to tell Matthieu about his philosophy of visual media and memory during a battle between Gekkostate and the UF military. As planned, they divert the attention of the KLFs away from a comrade, and (reluctantly for Holland) make their way to Bellforest.

14-year-old Renton Thurston narrates a typical day in his life: a boring existence where boredom was even to be expected. Renton gets unwanted attention due to the fact that he is the son of Adrock Thurston, who in turn is known worldwide as a military hero and savior. He is expected to follow in his grandfather's footsteps as a mechanic, as his grades are insufficient for civilian high school, let alone a military academy. Even his only joy in life—lifting—was blasted when the military turned his favorite spot near Bellforest into a live-fire testing area.

One of his valuables is a compac drive, given to him by his sister before she disappeared. From time to time, it would display a single word: "Eureka". Evidently, he is the only one in town who gets this message.

Renton's humdrum existence is shattered when a mysterious young girl named Eureka crash-lands her LFO—the legendary Nirvash typeZERO—into Axel's house, asking for repairs. He falls in love with her at first sight, and is impressed with her LFO piloting skills. He finds it strange that although the Nirvash has a socket for a compac drive, one is not installed. He offers to install his compac drive (the same one given to him by his sister), although Eureka correctly predicts that nothing will happen.

Axel approaches Eureka, offering her a device he had kept hidden for several years and demanding that she leave and never return. Eureka suddenly activates the Nirvash, taking Renton and Axel outside the garage moments before it is destroyed by UF missiles. Eureka quickly takes to the air to draw away the enemy. An injured Axel hands Renton the device, an expansion part for the compac drive called the "Amita Drive", and tells him to take it to the Nirvash and get rid of the military.

Renton takes the device and his board, and jumps off a cliff using a motorcycle.

[edit] Significance

Renton's inevitable reaction to Eureka using the flamethrower to "cremate" the wreckage of his house causes her to smile, for the first time in her life. This event is alluded to later in the series, and indicates that Renton plays a significant role in Eureka's life[1].
