The Blue Mage is a character class (or "job") featured in Square Enix's Final Fantasy series of computer role-playing games, in which the character utilises blue magic, a specialized school of magic which replicates the special attacks of various monsters through observation, or, in the majority of cases, by being targeted and surviving an attack.

[edit] Speciality

A Blue Mage may fluctuate in usefulness depending on how frequently they are used; typically a Blue Mage is very weak if not developed correctly, and very powerful if taught the correct techniques. Blue Mages usually need the aid of another character with the ability to control monsters, especially to learn curative skills that the monster wouldn't use on the Blue Mage otherwise. Originally Blue Mages were notable for wearing blue domino masks, but throughout the Final Fantasy series have not retained any distinct image like that of the White Mage and Black Mage.

[edit] History

The following lists the appearance of specified Blue Mage or characters who can be classed as having abilities fitting the Blue Mage description

[edit] Final Fantasy V

  • Blue Mage is a job in Final Fantasy V. Besides learning enemy special abilities, Blue Mages can "Scan" enemies for information on them. Blue Mages are similar to Red Mages, in this game, in that they have decent physical combat abilities.

[edit] Final Fantasy VI

  • Strago Magus uses the command Lore. Strago learns Blue Magic by way of it just having it cast. Be it by Gau, Relm, or the enemy themselves.
  • Gau learns enemy techniques while on the Veldt. Though he is not strictly considered a Blue Mage, but rather, a Morpher, he can use the enemy skills, as well as any immunities or elemental absorption, by using the Rage command. Because some of the monsters are too big to show, or lack of battle sprites were made for the monsters, Gau still retains his look, but gains the bonuses from the monster he is attacking as.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII

  • Equipping of the 'Enemy Skill' yellow materia grants the user the qualities of a blue mage.

[edit] Final Fantasy VIII

  • Quistis Trepe learns blue magic techniques by using items dropped by defeated monsters, such as using the Malboro Tentacle to learn the Malboro's signature attack, Bad Breath.

[edit] Final Fantasy IX

  • Quina Quen has a special command that allows him/herself to swallow enemies whole, learning whatever blue magic techniques they might possess in the process. One of Quina's attacks, Frog Drop, does damage based on the amount of frogs Quina has caught in the frog catching mini-game.

[edit] Final Fantasy X

  • Kimahri Ronso (who, incidently, has blue fur) learns enemy skills through use of his Lancet ability on an enemy with an available skill. Kimahri begins the game with the Jump ability. It is also possible for players to learn Blitzball moves in a similar way by observing them being used in a game. (Doesn't necessarily mean all Blitzball Players are Blue Mages though.)

[edit] Final Fantasy X-2

  • Characters equipped with the Gun Mage dressphere exhibit the qualities of a Blue Mage.

[edit] Final Fantasy XI

  • Added in Treasures of Aht Urhgan, the Blue Mage works similar to how it does in other games. Players learn enemy skills (only when the enemy uses them during a fight) at a seemingly random rate. Then the Blue Mage must set these spells to his/her spell list, which not only allows the spell to be used, but can also add stats, such as HP or MP. Also, if a Blue Mage combines 2 or more certain spells he/she can obtain inherent (such as Auto Regen or Attack Bonus) traits which are set until the blue mage unequips the respective combination.

[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics

  • The Ultima spell can be learned by the main character Ramza by surviving it, although this is a quality of his unique Squire class. Summoners can also learn Zodiac by being hit with it by an enemy who uses them.

Any spell can be learned this way as long as the character is in the job the ability belongs to.

[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

  • Humans can become Blue Mages by mastering one White Mage skill, and one Black Mage skill. Then, they must equip a Blue Saber to start learning the "Learning" support ability. With this, when some monsters use a particular ability on the Blue Mage, the Blue Mage learns it automatically, and is fully mastered. However, unlike others, you have to actually equip the "Learning" ability, even if you are still a Blue Mage. Beastmasters are the best way in this game to be used to coax the monster to use the ability you want.
