The organization is part of a nationwide association of health care plans licensed by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. This Association licenses companies to offer certain products and services under the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brand. The Tennessee-licensed organization is committed to remaining an independent, not-for-profit, locally governed health plan company.

In 1945, Chattanooga publisher Roy McDonald, alarmed at the increasing costs of hospital care and the inability of his employees and other citizens to pay, initiated a pre-payment plan for hospital bills. Acting on his social conscience to help those in need, McDonald founded the not-for-profit Tennessee Hospital Association, later called BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Founded under the public welfare laws of the state, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee still remains a not-for-profit company.

BlueCross and BlueShield are the oldest and best-known brand names in the U.S. health care industry. The BlueCross BlueShield organization is a network of independent, locally operated companies called Plans. Each Plan is community-based and works closely with local hospitals and physicians to help ensure plan members and customer groups receive quality and affordable health care that meets their particular health and financial needs.

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has been a model of efficiency and innovation for more than 60 years. The company is one of the most financially sound plans among the BlueCross and BlueShield plans nationwide.
