Blondi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blondi (1934 – April 29 or April 30, 1945) was the name of Adolf Hitler's German Shepherd Dog. She was given to him as a gift by Martin Bormann in 1941. Blondi stayed with Hitler even after his move to the Führerbunker during the fall of Berlin, and in April 1945 had a litter of five puppies through Gerdy Troost's German Shepherd "Harass." Hitler named one of the puppies "Wolf", and after the Fall of Berlin Soviets found the bodies of Blondi and one puppy. It is unknown what happened to the remaining four.
By all accounts, Hitler was quite fond of Blondi, keeping her at his side and allowing her to sleep in his bedroom in the bunker. But later, according to Traudl Junge, Hitler did not trust some cyanide capsules given to him by Heinrich Himmler to be effective, so to test them, he gave one to his great companion Blondi. It was indeed effective. Downfall portrays the killing of the dog, but it is not made explicit, despite Junge's input, that Hitler is "testing" the capsules.

Blondi is referenced in The Simpsons episode Dog of Death. Homer Simpson tells his son about how "Doggie Hell" is populated with "Hitler's dog and that Nixon dog."
