[edit] DYK
Hi Blng, I recently created this article. There is still some work that needs to go into it(mostly cpedit/grammar/spelling/wikilinks etc.,) but otherwise, it is almost complete. I was wondering if this will qualify for DYK. How do I go about it. Thanks. Sarvagnya 22:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- It is certainly long enough, an article does not need to be very long or comprehensive at all to be included (WP:DYK guidelines) such as Mahinda or Jambuka or Channa (Buddhist) - so it doesn't have to be more than a start-class article. DYK is for new articles, up and coming stuff. It is not really strict on grammar, sentence flow, etc, but it still must be WP:NPOV and sourced - and not the subject of tags like {{cleanup}}, {{tone}} - at the moment the article is not written in an encyclopedic tone, it has contractions "isn't" - it has POV things like "being the most important ones" (say who regarded them as such and why) - you also italicised part of the lead to emphasise a point, which isn't allowed as a reader must make up their own mind. You appear to have imported commentary from newspapers like "the then ruler of Mysore is even today fondly remembered as one of the greatest rulers to rule Mysore<by whom>, not to mention that he had the services of Bharat Ratna Sir M Vishweshwarayya to assist him" and "What had until then been confined to mostly muted protest, soon found a voice. This institution was the fruit of tireless efforts by Sri Gangadhar Deshpande at a time when Marathi language and culture had an overbearing presence in Kannada land" - even though newspapers and magazines user hyperbole and dramatic words (WP:WEASEL, WP:PEACOCK) when reporting, we can only import the facts to Wikipedia in unemotive language - otherwise cricket articles, eg will end up with stuff like "unbelievable performance", "abominable performance", "abysmal collapse". If some scholar made an assessment, we say "Wisden rated Sachin Tendulkar as the 2nd best batsmen ever" or "Wisden described Virender Sehwag as the "most exciting batsman in international circket"" (see their articles) - we can't just put it in as a statement. I think a good article to look at encyclopedic tone is Partition of India. Thanks Blnguyen (bananabucket) 00:31, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for your response. Yes, I admit the language and tone requires some work. I just put it all there and used some language just to maintain flow. But I will work on it, like I said it still needs many rounds of copyedit. I will also look at your articles. Thanks. Sarvagnya 02:54, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Arbcom questions
Hi. I'm Ral315, editor of the Wikipedia Signpost. We're doing a series on ArbCom candidates, and your response is requested.
- What positions do you hold (adminship, mediation, etc.)?
- Why are you running for the Arbitration Committee?
- Have you been involved in any arbitration cases? In what capacity?
Please respond on my talk page. We'll probably go to press in about three or four hours, but late responses will be added as they're submitted. Thanks, Ral315 (talk) 23:21, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2006 ICC Champions Trophy squads
Hey - I added the county players because I wanted to show what first class teams they'd played for in the previous season of cricket, i.e. 2005-06 and 2006. Kinda similar to 2006 FIFA World Cup squads which lists players at the club where they were before the cup started. Might not be a good idea, but at least it's consistent Sam Vimes | Address me 23:42, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- You sure you're not thinking of Parthiv? See [1] Sam Vimes | Address me 23:46, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- OK, I'm definitely mistaken, a cricinfo article I read when he debuted in Mohali seemed to imply that he had returned to Gujarat, as well as the cricinfo profile, but on checking the Ranji stats again, he is listed under Maharashtra. No, it wasn't Parthive Patel the keeper that had me confused. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 23:50, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ta muchly
Thanks for the help with the most recent DYK update, the shortened noms are very handy stocking-fillers. What's your opinion on the stockpile we seem to have built up in the suggestion box? I've still yet to come up with noms (short or otherwise) for Riley (motorcar), Master of the Parement, Hindu iconography, Baldwin, Archbishop of Trier, Belford Hendricks, Miserere (Josquin), National Equal Rights League and maybe Shore Tilbe Irwin + Partners. Should I go ahead with them to give updaters more options, or just leave the current batch to filter through? GeeJo (t)⁄(c) • 01:23, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, firstly, I think we should spend more time reading BBC more often, as ITN seems to be dead and one less ITN entry seems to cost us on average perhaps 1.5 updates per template. Most of the time, there are only unremarkable cricket noms there, and I am saying that as a person who writes cricket articles. Aside from that, I think we should encourage all writers and updaters to test their mind at User:Tony1/How_to_satisfy_Criterion_1a:_redundancy_exercises - I did them the other day when trying to get Ian Thorpe to FA after Tony objected. Tony tells us that 10% of FAC content is redundant, so I'd figure it would be more for DYK articles. I think you should write the noms so that we have more choice. That would help raise standards across the board, so we get better articles. Unfortunately, we are very soft with the "interesting" criteria, as we don't police the articles well enough for "hooks". User:Lar is not doing updates anymore, but perhaps I can ask him to do some reviewing as it takes less time. He was good at hook-policing. The other problem is that most of us updaters seem to be away on weekends. We need to fix that. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:50, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- PS, that last DYK you gave me, registered my half century. Thanks, for helping to make DYK an enjoyable place to participate. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:50, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- Yeah, I've never had much time for updating ITN. It's always seemed to me while browsing Talk:Main Page that every new entry added to that section brought on five paragraphs of ranting about relevancy/notability/accuracy/etc., and I've just not fancied taking on the hassle of justifying entries there. I may give it a go next time the right side of the page is coming up a bit short and see what comes of it. GeeJo (t)⁄(c) • 01:56, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Blnguyen, I have added two recent DYKs to the Maharashtra portal. Check 'em out. I am on the lookout for other DYKs which may be related to Maharashtra. But, I want to know one thing, the current DYKs on the Maharashtra portal page, do they need to be archived ? As otherwise, the page may become too long. How do I archive them ? [edit] Furry convention at Did you know?
Hi there! You stated that the content of this article was moved from FurFright (deletion debate). In fact, I wrote it pretty much from scratch - there really wasn't much to merge. [edit] Swimmers of the Year
BInguyen,
Just letting you know that we are releasing the various Swimmers of the Year on our site this week.
So far, we have Open Water Swimmers as Larisa Ilchenko and Thomas Lurz; African Swimmers as Suzaan Van Biljon and Roland Schoeman; and European Swimmers as Laure Manaudou and Laszlo Cseh.
We will be releasing two separate awards Thursday before announcing the World Swimmers of the Year on Friday.
Also, if you want any more Ian Thorpe information, I just did SWM Anthology piece on Ian at: http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/lane9/news/12768.asp Feel free to dive into that if you need any more information that we might have.
RedTieGuy
- Ok, thanks very much. It'll be interesting to see who wins the women's...Lenton, Steffen, Jones or Manaudou. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:01, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you. *smile*. It came down to the final ballot and someone actually came from behind to win it. It was intense.

I added my site www.calgarykiosk.ca to your external links in Calgary and it was taken off.
It has unique and relevant content and will continue to grow to be a relevant Travel Guide for the city of Calgary. There are other sites that are listed there that are more or less just "links"... eg mycalgary.net and www.mobypages.com ... yet they still remain? Who do I speak with about this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.101.209.48 (talk • contribs).

[edit] Children's cancer and Thorpe
Maybe I'm missing something here. How would he have had time for his future brother in law to get childhood cancer and then become enough of a relative to impell him to help fund the matter? JoshuaZ 04:08, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think I deleted the part about him being a relative because his sister wasn't married at the time. (She married in 2000). At the time, Thorpe knew the cancer victim as a person friend, so he selected the cancer charity to focus on. Is this about the tense of the relative and the future? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:12, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, until you just clarified it I was very confused. It may need some phrasing to make it clear that Thorpe became interested in the charity many years after the person had had cancer(if I'm understanding you correctly). JoshuaZ 04:21, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:WP SouthAsia
Why did you block a template which I created and intended to expand? There is no rational point in blocking Template:WP SouthAsia unless someone wants to take sides in a dispute. - Because there is an edit war. The existence of an edit war means that there is a problem. WP works on consensus. The lack of it means that things are not the way we want it to be. So the fact that it is locked is no endorsement, as it would be worse to revert and then lock. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 23:31, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portfolio for ArbCom
On Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2006/Summary table, I added a column "Examples" with links that exhibit a candidate's arbitration skills. My motivation is that as a voter, I don't want to just rely on a candidate's words, but also see their actions. Moreover, I believe a portfolio of "model cases" to remember in difficult situations can be useful for each candidate, as well.
So far I have entered examples for the candidates who registered first (from their questions page), and I'm not sure if and when I will get to yours, so you may want to enter an example or two yourself. — Sebastian (talk) 00:55, 4 December 2006 (UTC) (I stopped watching this page. [edit] A possible problem
Hi and thanks, BInguyen. However, I have a concern: I was not active at the time you indicated that the article on Iorgu Iordan was featured on the main page, so I cannot tell if it was actually featured on the main page, but I could find in the archive. When I looked through the history of Next Update, I noticed that it had been removed at some point (together with other articles). I'm not writing this out of vanity and, in case you had chosen to have it removed, I would have simply lived with it; I am, however, wondering if the template was not the victim of vandalism or a misunderstanding (and investigation of this may be helpful in assessing the "anyone can edit Next Update" project). [edit] Main Page Balance
I presumed the ITN items would be re-added once the new set of DYK items, which take up more space, are added in about an hour. -- tariqabjotu 00:32, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps the gross imbalance is a product of differing screen resolutions (as noted by your edit summary). At 1260px, there's significant whitespace below DYK, but when I resize my screen, I see that disappears. I'm sure more people use 1024px, so if it looks fine at that resolution, I'll just have to suffer. -- tariqabjotu 00:34, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin Help Request
Hi - you are an administrator whose good work I have seen and I trust; I was wondering if you could help me. I've spent a LOT of time on Wikipedia doing edits to pages on Sydney's public transport system; it's a huge project, and I'm nowhere near finished; however in the last few days I have been very disheartened by a certain user (User:Joestella) who apppears to be singlehandedly undoing all the work I have done. In many circumstances he has simply deleted great swathes of information; I've tried to make compromises, but he continues to move and revert pages to what he thinks is good without even asking any other user or asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sydney, where a great deal of other users have been involved. I am starting to get a little sick of him, because he appears to be reverting a lot of work that I have been personally involved in, on the grounds that individual articles on public transport sites (railway stations, ferry wharves, etc. which appear to be notable everywhere else except for him in Sydney). There is no consensus at present that this is the case— individual railway station articles appear in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and many other cities around the world, and ferry wharf articles in Brisbane, London and other cities as well. I'm a bit stuck, because I'm starting to feel like I'm no longer wanted here and my edits aren't valuable. I have spent hours and hours and while I'm happy to have my work improved on, in many cases he just deletes it and replaces it with what he considers to be good. Can you help me or suggest what I should do? I'm running out of patience here but I'm trying to maintain my calm. JROBBO 09:16, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe some suggestions (for me, not him) are the best thing at the moment. And from the looks of the user in question's talk page, it looks like I'm not the only person who has been upset by his edits. JROBBO 09:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Update - I think I have sorted things for the moment; he calmly discussed some edits that I made that he reverted with some proper explanation that hasn't been forthcoming in the past. I'll let you know if I need any more help, but I will probably be right for the moment. JROBBO 10:57, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

- OK, I think the consensus and incumbency is with you. No need to worry. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:46, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Questions
Thanks for your e-mail--I appreciate it. I've left you a followup question to your qualification of your initial statement. I'll be off-wiki until, most likely, this time tomorrow or so, so don't be alarmed if I don't respond right away. Chick Bowen 14:28, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks
Thanks for the DYK notice and kind words on Sheshequin Path. I wrote it to get rid of a red link in White Deer Hole Creek, which was in FAC at the time (and is now featured - hooray!), so I apologize I didn't reply right away (I was frantically trying to clean up the article for FAC). I keep watching PA articles but have not seen anyone who might be Janx Jrotum lately. Thanks again and keep up the good work, Ruhrfisch 22:24, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Great ! Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:46, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for your kind words. I am always leary of asking people not involved in an article to vote on it in FAC - is that considered good wiki-etitquette? I put notices on the Wikiproject Pennsylvania and Wikiproject Rivers Talk Pages and got a good response. I will vote for you for ArbCom, keep up the good work. Ruhrfisch 02:46, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ahhh!
Thanks for the quick reply! I was hoping there was a better explination! I've reverted my vote on your page as there had been no other edits since. I was also in the middle of writing you a talk page note about it, but then we crossed paths! Good Luck in the election. — xaosflux Talk 01:08, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, you're welcome. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:46, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

For your fine work on all sorts of articles, but especially your technical and mathematics articles. Even if we don't always see eye to eye. :D Kylu 05:06, 12 December 2006 (UTC) |
[edit] DYK\Sacisaurus
Mea culpa on the Sacisaurus talk page Thank you for the DYK heads-up, but as I explain here, I screwed up and didn't actually create the article, just moved it incorrectly.J. Spencer 05:21, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:DYK
Looks like its about 5 hours overdue for an update. Care to do the honors? :) savidan(talk) (e@) 18:38, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- Don't be sorry. The only reason I asked you is because it looks like you do a pretty heroic share of the DYK updating. savidan(talk) (e@) 06:37, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Concordia Newsletter
Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.
[edit] Help out now!
- Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
- Give people the Civility Barnstar.
- Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
- Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
- Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.
We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.
[edit] Decision Making
The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.
If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

[edit] A smiley day
Dakota has smiled at you! Smiles promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. Spread the WikiLove by smiling to someone else, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. Smile to others by adding {{subst:smile}}, {{subst:smile2}} or {{subst:smile3}} to their talk page with a friendly message. Happy editing!
[edit] thanks
Thanks for reverting my userpage. That wasn't particularly inspired vandalism, but maybe the objective was a certain subtlety. In any case, I appreciate it. - BanyanTree 04:08, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
