"Bleed Like Me" was the second North American single to be lifted from fourth Garbage album Bleed Like Me. It was released to Modern Rock radio stations in May 2005 where it followed previous single "Why Do You Love Me" into the Modern Rock Tracks top 40.

"Bleed Like Me" is a mellow, acoustic sounding track, the centrepiece of the album of the same name. It was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the 2004 sessions for the album Bleed Like Me.
Bass on "Bleed Like Me" was performed by Garbage drummer Butch Vig.
"Bleed Like Me" is published by Deadarm Music/Almo Music Corp (ASCAP) and Vibecrusher Music/Irving Music, Inc (BMI).
The song's full legal title is "Bleed Like Me". It is registered at ASCAP under '(Title Code: 321417418)' and at BMI as 'BMI Work #7363915'.

"Bleed Like Me" was released on Tuesday, 3 May 2005 to US alternative rock radio, although it had been receiving some airplay before then. It debuted at #39 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart on 28 May and moved to #27 several weeks later.
The single charted on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play several weeks after falling off the Modern Rock Tracks chart. This makes it the first single since "Special" to make the dance chart. The song was still on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in November 2005.
The Eric Kupper remixes of "Bleed Like Me" climbed to the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart Top Ten in the week ending 18th Sept 2005.
"Bleed Like Me" has been rumoured to eventually be an international single, although this has not been confirmed by the band's management or record labels.

As the North American release was not available as a domestic single, no B-sides have accompanied "Bleed Like Me" as yet.

The video was filmed in Los Angeles on April 12, with Sophie Muller again directing. The video was much more sedate and somber than the one for "Why Do You Love Me", with Shirley working as a nurse in a mental institution.
It references Hitchcock's classic 60's horror movies The Birds and Psycho. If you look closely at the medical cabinet that Shirley raids, the files shown are 'Manson, Shirley', and behind it 'Muller, Sophie' the video director.
A short news report from the set was shown on news channel CNN shortly after the video was filmed.

A 'clean' radio edit of the song was released to American radio in May 2005.
"Bleed Like Me" was remixed by DJ Eric Kupper who had previously worked on Garbage's 1999 single "You Look So Fine". These remixes were officially issued on promotional CD and 12" at the start of July 2005.
In September 2005 new mixes by producer Ralphi Rosario began to circulate - it has not been confirmed whether these mixes are official.

"Bleed Like Me" has been performed at almost every show on the "Bleed Like Me" tour, and was first performed live onstage at the Olympia in Paris, France.
It has also been performed acoustically, notably on Washington DC's DC101 and for the Yahoo! LAUNCHcast website.
It has also been performed for TV shows Top of the Pops, Napster Live, CD:UK in the United Kigdom, MusiquePlus in Canada and The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and on Fuse Comp'd in the States.

"Bleed Like Me" is the only original Garbage song to directly reference another musical composition - the disco classic "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.

Butch Vig: "Musically it’s very simple, it’s basically this little hypnotic riff on the acoustic guitar and it builds a little bit, but the song never gets too big musically. It stays pretty simple. Really it’s all about her vocals. She said ‘I want to sound like a girls choir’ and we’re like ‘Cool, let’s just do it now’. She went in singing ‘You should see my scars’ and it just floored me. Still when I hear that the hairs on the back of my neck go up. It’s really an amazing moment on the record."
Shirley Manson: "It’s about a search for empathy. We can forget so easily that people are the same regardless of their sexuality, religion, colour or moral values. Regardless of the differences between people – their colour, creed, sexuality or how they behave and express themselves – essentially we are exactly the same.
