Talk:Black Hill (Peak District)

Isn't the other boundary with Cheshire, not Derbyshire? (don't think it's changed since 1968?) Linuxlad 10:08, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Digital mapping, including Streetmap, my digital Anquet map, and OS's getamap, all show it as clearly being on the border with Derbyshire, with an area north of the A628 (now?) within Derbyshire. There is also the potential for confusion here - there is a Black Hill on the Cheshire border (and just outside the Peak District), but not the Black Hill (Peak District) being discussed here. I have reverted the page to say Derbyshire, but if there is a further, more recent source, please do update. StephenDawson 12:14, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Although one site lists Black Hill (Peak District) as the Cheshire county top, every other source I've seen gives the highest point in the county as Shining Tor. Since Shining Tor is only 559 m, it stands to reason that Black Hill (Peak District), at 582 m, must be outside Cheshire. I have also got a map on which Cheshire is shown to reach right up to Black Hill, but it is an old map, and a German one at that. I don't know exactly how old it is, but certainly from before local government reform in 1974. I wouldn't expect any border to be the same now as it was then; everything has changed since 1968, in terms of county boundaries at least. Stemonitis 15:55, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hmm - looks like they changed the boundary post-1980 (the date of my 'Dark Peak' map - on wear resistant paper so I've never needed an update :-)) - my map shows the Derby boundary running all the way up the Woodhead Valley and the River Etherow to Far Small Clough, then over to Swains Head and to the River Derwent. I guess you're right and they tidied up the Cheshire bulge in the late 90s (?, but NOT 1974*) when the unitaries were created (though down here, around old Avon, they studiously left all such boundaries alone). (*Very significant revisions of the county boundaries _had_ been mooted in the Maud report in the late 60s IIRC, but the eventual 1974 changes left most counties intact - that was their point!)

Thanks for picking it up. Linuxlad 16:36, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

This would have been the Tintwistle Rural District which did indeed change hands in 1974. If it had remained part of Cheshire it would have been cut off from the rest of Cheshire by Greater Manchester. Morwen - Talk 16:19, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
