Blaze the Cat (ブレイズ ・ザ ・キャット Bureizu za Kyatto?) is a fictional character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is a lavender, female, anthropomorphic cat who made her debut in the Nintendo DS video game, Sonic Rush. She is from an alternate future timeline and the defender of the Sol Emeralds. Blaze is 14 years old, 95 centimeters (3 ft and 1 inch) tall, and keeps her weight secret.[1]

In the English version of the games, Blaze is voiced by Bella Hudson. Bella Hudson was mistakenly credited as Berra Hudson as Blaze in Sonic Rush.

Blaze is the only playable character in Sonic Rush aside from Sonic himself.

Throughout the game, she learns the meaning of friendship from Sonic and his friends, especially Cream the Rabbit. Cream opens her up to the world and the two become close partners, similar to the friendship of Sonic and Tails.

It is through the power of friendship that she realizes the true powers of the Sol Emeralds and transforms into her super form as a product of the Sol Emeralds, to help Super Sonic stop Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega from taking over the universe. After Sonic and Blaze finish their adventure, they promise to see each other again and say their goodbyes as they shake hands, being torn from each other as a result of their respective dimensions being returned to normal. Blaze, still in super form, now understands her power and the meaning of friendship as she thinks of Sonic's words of advice.

Blaze appears in the 15th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog.[2] She hails from the same future along with the new character Silver the Hedgehog, where she constantly fights Iblis with him.

At the end of Silver's story, Blaze ends up sealing Iblis inside her soul, then uses Chaos Control to warp herself to another dimension (a possible explanation for appearing in a paralel universe in Sonic Rush) with "Good luck, Silver" as her last words before fading away, destroying the Flames of Disaster in their future. Later, Sonic and the others destroy Iblis and Mephiles as Solaris in past, present, and future, which erases the events of the game from history. It is unknown, however, if Blaze comes back to life.

[edit] Sonic Rivals

Blaze makes a cameo appearance as a collectable card in this game; she has no connection to the storyline whatsoever, contrary to popular belief. [3]

[edit] Archie Comics

Blaze first appears in issue #160, and again in #161, where she comes to Knothole seeking the "Blue One", aka Sonic. It is unclear whether she will reappear in a future issue.

[edit] Personality

Although Blaze is somewhat shy and withdrawn when meeting strangers, she doesn't let this prevent her from fulfilling her mission. Her lifestyle is incredibly similar to Knuckles', this means Blaze is as anti-social and as shy as he is and often finds it hard to open up and talk to people. She hates having the spotlight on her, preferring to take a backseat. Throughout the course of Sonic Rush she develops a more friendly and gentle personality.

Blaze wears a cape because she was teased for her special fire abilities when she was a child. (This implies that her skin appears to be on fire, or that her skin is translucent showing flames underneath, or that her fire-related abilities have some other effect on her body's external surfaces.) However, she will toss off the cape in a heartbeat if she needs to use her abilities.[4]

[edit] Relationships

  • Silver the Hedgehog - Blaze is from the same time and planet as Silver. As a pyrokinetic in a world of psychokinetics, Blaze was teased by others, but Silver accepted her and thus the two are close friends. Together, they battle the Iblis who has destroyed their world. She and Silver hold a brother/sister kind of bond.
  • Cream the Rabbit - After Cream finds Blaze, she takes her to tea at her house. Blaze is shocked by how friendly Cream is. Blaze decides to go search for the Sol Emeralds, but Cream offers to guide her. The two form a fast friendship as Cream helps Blaze in her search for the emeralds. Cream is later kidnapped by Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega, and Blaze, admitting Cream is her friend, rescues her.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog - At first, the other characters suggest she should seek Sonic's help - Blaze denies this and wonders why they are so dependent on him. However, through working with Sonic in order to save the universe from Eggman and Eggman Nega, the two become close friends, and before she goes back to her own dimension, she promises to meet him again. Similar to Sonic's transformation with the Chaos Emeralds, she has the ability to transform into Burning Blaze using the Sol Emeralds from her world.
  • Eggman Nega and Dr. Eggman - In Sonic Rush, Eggman and his alternate dimensional self (or possible descendant) Eggman Nega team up to rule both of their times/dimensions together.
  • Mephiles the Dark - Blaze and Silver encounter Mephiles at some point in Sonic the Hedgehog. Mephiles tells them that Sonic apparently caused "Iblis" to appear.
  • Amy Rose - Amy is the girl madly in love with Sonic the Hedgehog. After meeting Blaze she questions who she is. After Amy discovers Sonic is looking for her, she comes to the conclusion that the two are in love, when in reality Blaze and Sonic do not have those feelings for each other.
  • Miles "Tails" Prower - Tails is Sonic's best friend and helped Sonic find Blaze.
  • Knuckles the Echidna - After Blaze and Cream run into Knuckles, Blaze and Knuckles get into a fight and form a small rivalry.

[edit] Abilities

  • Blaze can run moderately fast, but she isn't as fast as Sonic. This has been proved in the multiplayer mode of Sonic Rush, where she is considerably slower.
  • Blaze is able to control, create, and use fire, meaning she is a pyrokinetic.
  • Blaze turns into a tornado when jumping, similar to Espio in Knuckles Chaotix, and doesn't keep speed or go faster.
  • By using the Sol Emeralds, Blaze is able to attain a Super Form.

[edit] Abilities

Blaze's attacks and actions featured in Sonic Rush include:

  • Axel Jump: This is used as a variant to Sonic's spin jump. Blaze turns into a fire like tornado, which she can use to jump onto enemies, or to get higher ground.
  • Burst Hover: When in mid-air, Blaze is able to create fire onto the bottom her shoes, which she can use to hover for a short amount of time.
  • Burst Dash: The variant to Sonic's spin dash, Burst Dash allows Blaze to hover and charge up power to gain speed, then take off in a fiery tornado.
  • Fire Boost: A variant to Sonic's super boost, Blaze can use this to attack enemies as long as her tension gauge is full, or at least close to it.
  • Axel Tornado: After hitting a spring, Blaze can do a variety of tricks, with a line of fire closely following her.
  • Jump Step: After launching off a spring or a rail, Blaze can temporarily hover towards an area fairly quickly.

[edit] Trivia

  • Blaze is often referred to as a queen; however she is called a princess in Sonic Rush. She's referred to as "Queen Blaze the Cat" on the official Sega of America Sonic mini site, Sonic Central, as well as the next Sonic the Hedgehog game website; indicating that she may have been retconned into a queen, or referring to her as a "princess" may have just been a translation error, or possibly vice versa.
  • Blaze is the first, and currently the only, female Sonic character to have a super form.
  • Blaze has some similarities with Espeon, a Pokémon, such as the lavender fur and the red crystal on her head. She also has some similarities with the Ci-Kat-A, a space monster from the Swat Kats series.
