Blaydon railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blaydon railway station is a railway station serving Blaydon in Tyne and Wear, northern England. It is located on the Tyne Valley Line which runs from Newcastle upon Tyne to Carlisle, and is managed by Northern Rail.
The station was constructed by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway (N&CR), and opened on 10 March 1835. It was substantially rebuilt in 1912 with new red brick station buildings and glass canopies.
In 1969, Blaydon became an unstaffed station, and the canopies were removed. The station buildings were demolished in 1977 due to neglect and persistent vandalism.
In recent years, falling passenger numbers have led to a significant reduction in service frequency. As of December 2005, Blaydon station is served by just three Hexham-bound trains and three Newcastle-bound trains on Mondays to Fridays. On Saturdays there are three Hexham and two Newcastle trains. There are no trains at all on Sundays.
