The National Rail station has both through platforms and terminal platforms.

[edit] Services

The through platforms are served by First Capital Connect (formerly Thameslink) trains running north to south across London from Bedford and Luton in the north to Brighton in the south via London Bridge and the south west London suburbs around Sutton via Elephant & Castle.

The terminal platforms are used by Southeastern services to Sevenoaks via Denmark Hill and Swanley and occasional peak-only services via Herne Hill.

Southeastern also run peak hour services through Blackfriars to and from City Thameslink.

Blackfriars Station has most of its platforms on a bridge over the river.

[edit] History

The original Blackfriars station was opened in 1864, on the south bank of the River Thames. It closed in 1886 after the opening of Blackfriars Bridge, and a new station, St Paul's, opened on the north bank. It was renamed Blackfriars in 1937.

Northbound services used to go to Holborn Viaduct station prior to its closure and demolition, but now go north via City Thameslink station.
