Blackfriars, Newcastle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blackfriars is a restored 13th-century friary in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England. It is in the city centre, close to the city's Chinatown.
The buildings served as a monasterial retreat for some 300 years until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Blackfriars was then converted into a series of meeting rooms and almshouses for the destitute.
The buildings were restored in the 1980s, and now house a range of craft workshops and a cafe/bar. Blackfriars also houses an exhibition which details the history of Newcastle. A large grassed courtyard contrasts with the busy city life that surrounds it.
The site is close to the most intact section of the old town walls.
