Black Antlers was originally released in CD-R format by Coil in 2004 in a limited edition. The album was later re-edited by Peter Christopherson and expanded to include a second CD of two new tracks, as well as a new track on the first disc. The second edition was released in 2006 August on the same day as the expanded version of The Remote Viewer. Both remasters were printed in Thailand and feature high quality images and packaging. Both of the reissues are also identical in packaging style.

For this release, Coil were: Jhonn Balance, Peter Christopherson, Tom Edwards, Cliff Stapleton, Thighpaulsandra and Mike York.

"Sex With Sun Ra" is about the influential jazz musician Sun Ra.

The first edition of this album was sold during their Even An Evil Fatigue mini-tour.

This reissue of this album is currently available at the official Coil website, Thresholdhouse.com.

[edit] Song origins

"The Gimp (Sometimes)" was originally released as an recording by Coil on the compilation Hate People Like Us by People Like Us. The original version was titled "The Gimp/Sometimes" and sounds much less developed than the version on Black Antlers. A version of "Sex With Sun Ra (Part One - Saturnalia)", titled "Sex With Sun Ra" later appeared on the compilation Rough Trade Shops: Counter Culture 04. The version on the compilation is 6:00 in length. "Wraiths And Strays (From Montreal)" is from a live performance on 2003 May 29, in Montreal, Canada at Mutek 2003. "The Wraiths And Strays Of Paris" is a edited version of a live performance in Paris, France at La Locomotive on 2004 May 23. "All The Pretty Little Horses" is a traditional British song that was brought to light on the Current 93 album All The Pretty Little Horses, an album which John Balance provided vocals for three tracks. "Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)" is a version of the songs "Teenage Lightning 1" and "Teenage Lightning 2" from the previous Coil album Love's Secret Domain. The version of the song as it appears on "Black Antlers" is similar to the version on The Ape Of Naples titled "Teenage Lightning 2005". "Black Antlers (Where's Your Child?) (Vers 1)" aka "Black Antler's (Where's Your Child?)" are covers of the song "Where's Your Child?" by Bam Bam. All of the songs from the original pressing of the album were played live around the time of this release and sound similar to their live counterparts. All of the songs on the original pressing of this album appear on Selvaggina, Go Back Into The Woods as a live performance.
