Bittle's Bar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bittle's Bar is a bar in Belfast, Northern Ireland located at Victoria Square in the city centre.

The bar is on the ground floor of a wedge shaped builging much like the Flatiron Building in New York City, only on a much smaller scale. Designed by Thomas Jackson & Son, it is decorated with gilded shamrocks and dates from 1861.

Formerly known as The Shakespeare, Bittle's Bar retains a literary theme with portraits of Ireland's most celebrated poets and authors, from Beckett to Joyce, Wilde and WB Yeats. The dark green of its walls and drapes create a cosy, intimate atmosphere, making it a popular venue for imbibers of all ages, from old hands studying the current racing form, to young go-getters popping in for a swift pre-prandial libation.

Bittles also serves classic Belfast pub grub, including champ, a regional favourite of creamed potatoes and scallions.

Behind the bar hangs a painting of Kelly’s Cellars in a kind of homage to the traditional Belfast pub.
