Bitterfeld

Bitterfeld is a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, capital of the district Bitterfeld. It is situated approx. 25 km south of Dessau, and 30 km northeast of Halle (Saale). During the GDR years, it gained notoriety for its chemical industry complex which caused remarkably severe pollution even for GDR standards. Today it is still largely an industrial town.
Bitterfeld is also the seat of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("collective municipality") Bitterfeld, which consists of the following municipalities (population in 2005 between brackets):
