Bishop of Chelmsford

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bishop of Chelmsford heads the Anglican Diocese of Chelmsford in the Province of Canterbury.

The present diocese covers the County of Essex including the former part of Essex now within the Greater London area, together with a small area of the County of Suffolk. The see is in the town of Chelmsford where the seat is located at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary, Saint Peter and Saint Cedd which was elevated to cathedral status in 1914.

The Bishop's residence is Bishopscourt, Margaretting, Ingatestone, Essex.

The diocese was founded in 1914 under King George V from the Diocese of Saint Albans (of which it had been a part since 1877). It has no direct institutional ascendent in a Catholic diocese. The current bishop is the Right Reverend John Warren Gladwin, MA, DipTh, the 9th Lord Bishop of Chelmsford, who signs John Chelmsford.
