[edit] Brief history

It was founded by Shri Ghanshyam Das Birla in 1929 as an intermediate college.

During World War II, the Government of India established a technical training centre at Pilani for the supply of technicians for defense services and industry. At the end of the war, in 1946, it was converted it into the Birla Engineering College with degree programmes in electrical and mechanical engineering.

Knowledge is Power Supreme

In 1964, the Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science were merged to form the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS). In this period of inception (especially during 1964-1970), BITS Pilani received support from the Ford Foundation and benefited from an alliance with the MIT.

BITS Pilani started to expand in India and abroad since 2000. New campuses were established in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2000) and Goa, India (2004), and a fourth campus is to be opened in 2007 at Jawaharnagar (near Hakimpet Air Force station), Hyderabad. BITS also runs a virtual university and an extension centre in Bangalore.

[edit] Reputation and Rankings

Many reputed sources, including the UNESCO Science Report 2005 (ISBN 92-3-103967-9) make use of Asiaweek magazine's latest rankings of science and technology schools in the Asia-Pacific region, 2000. According to this ranking, BITS Pilani was ranked in the Top 20 in Asia (overall), and in the Top 5 in Asia in terms of 'Student Selectivity'.

The management programmes offered by BITS Pilani have also been ranked by Asiaweek (Top 30 Best Full-Time MBA, Top 30 By Reputation, Top 5 Distance MBA). These programmes have also been profiled by Business Week Online (The Best B Schools).

Annual rankings of engineering colleges in India have been published by the magazine India Today since 1997. BITS Pilani was ranked in the Top 10 consistently (1997-2004), but opted out of the survey since 2005. However, the institute participates in the Dataquest-IDC Survey as well as in the Outlook-Cfore Survey, and was ranked in the Top 10 T-Schools of India 2006 by both these surveys.

BITS Pilani was also the only Indian university to be ranked in the Top 20 Wired organisations of Asia by Business Today (January 18, 2004 issue).

The institute is accredited (with a five-star rating) by the Government of India's National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the period ending February 7, 2007.

BITS Pilani is also the institute of choice for toppers of the school leaving examinations in India. For instance, toppers of 21 educational boards including the CBSE and the ICSE chose to join the Institute in 2006. BITS Pilani is also reputed for an array of work integrated learning programmes for HRD of a vast spectrum of Indian corporates.

The Institute has strong alliances with various indian/foreign universities/industries for exchange of students/faculty, Distance Learning Programs, etc. A small list of colleges is given below:

1.MIT, Boston, 2.University of Maryland, 3.University of Otago, 4.University of Southern California, 5.Kathmandu university 6.University of Oklahoma, 7.Victoria University, 8.Kansas State University, 9.Arizona State University, 10.University of New South Wales, 11.Purdue University, and many more.

[edit] Undergraduate Admission Procedure

BITS admits students through revised admission procedure since 2005 via on-line computer test (BITSAT). BITSAT is held between May 1 and June 10 in many cities all over India. The exam tests subject-content in English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Logical reasoning, and is focused on higher secondary curriculum in India. Prospective students are required to obtain minimum 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in their higher secondary examinations to be eligible for admission.

Toppers of higher secondary examinations are exempted from taking BITSAT test and are considered admitted. This exemption helps ensure that BITS retain the significant number (about 20) of first rank holders from across the country who join BITS every year.

Acceptance rate in BITS is very low (2.6% in 2006) making it one the toughest schools in India and the world to get admission into. For more information, see BITSAT.

[edit] Current Initiatives

BITS Pilani is the pioneer of university-industry linkage program in India. It is also setting new standards in distance learning programs with its virtual university going online. BITSConnect, an alumni initiative, has commissioned a $50 million VLSI Lab initiative which aims to conduct semiconductor research and development, now called as the "O-Lab". BITS Pilani is a key partner in several international initiatives like the development of JournalServer open-access digital library, the Project IPV6, MIT iCampus initiative, etc.

While countless seminars, workshops, conferences and symposia for years have paid lip service to fostering university - industry linkages, BITS Pilani has gone way ahead of others in successfully implementing the same in India Today.

BITS Pilani since 1973 has made a pioneering contribution for the development of institutionalized linkages between university and industry. The early start evidently helped, for the Institute today, has tie-ups with a staggering number of corporates across the globe.

The Practice School Program of BITS takes all its students to the industry for seven and half months as an integral component of the academic curriculum like the medical internship. In terms of Practice School - I Programme, which is presently implemented for two months at the end of second year for all its campus programmes, the number of industries has grown from 14 stations and 244 students in 1975 to 129 stations and 1376 students in 2006. In terms of Practice School - II programme which is implemented for five and half months in the final year for all its campus programme students, the number of industries has grown from 1 station and 24 students in 1973 to 135 stations & 1092 students in 2005.

The off campus work integrated learning programmes of BITS addresses the Human Resource Development needs of the industry. In terms of off-campus degree programmes, the enrollment has grown from 30 students in 1979 to over 10,000 students in 2005. The off campus doctoral program of BITS allows industry professionals to pursue PhD from their employing organizations.

Since 1979, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani has been participating in the human resources development activities of the industries through several degree programmes by integrating the working environment of the employees with the learning environment required by the Institute.

Considering that present day information technologies can allow a rich interactive learning experience that may surpass the interactivity of a traditional classroom, the BITS model of off-campus education emphasizes on acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated information and deploys synchronous instruction through Internet based desktop video conferencing as well as asynchronous instruction through on-demand lectures.

Presently, BITS Pilani has dedicated memorandum of understanding with a vast spectrum of national and international organizations which include Ashok Leyland, Bharat Forge, Bharat Dynamics, GRASIM, Chambal Fertilizers, Hindustan Zinc, NTPC, Sankara Nethralaya, Madras Medical Mission, Frontier Lifeline, LV Prasad Eye Institute, CMC Vellore, Bombay Hospital, Dr Reddy's, IPCA Labs, ITRC Lucknow, Strides Arcolabs, TIFR, CDC Delhi, IIQM Jaipur, Cognizant, GEITC, Honeywell, HCL, HP Labs, IBM, Intel, Microsoft Research, Motorola, Nokia, Patni, Philips Software, Qualcomm, Satyam, Tech Mahindra, Texas Instruments, Wipro, etc.

BITS Pilani has indeed set the Benchmark for Industry University Collaborations.
