Bireuen

Bireuen, also known as Bireun, is a regency of Aceh, Indonesia. It is 105 miles east of the provincial capital, Banda Aceh. It has an area of 1,899 km² and population of 340,271 (2000). It faces the Strait of Malacca on the northeast coastline. The location is at 5°12′18″N, 96°42′06″E. Bireuen has been affected by the clashes between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the government.

The regency is divided into 10 subdistricts (kecamatan).

On 26 December 2004, it was affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
