Biltzar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

'Biltzar' is Basque word "meaning", "parliament", "assembly" or "meeting". It's usually translated into Spanish as junta. It appears in the names of institutions such as the provincial parliaments of Biscay, Alava and Guipuscoa: Arabako, Bizkaiko, eta Gipuzkoako Biltzar Nagusiak, meaning literally "General Assembly of" the corresponding province.

The Biltzar Ttipia ("small committee") was the governing organ of the party Euskadiko Ezkerra. The Basque name of the Basque Parliament is Eusko Legebiltzarra ("Basque Law-assembly").

Batzarre has a similar meaning, thought the etymology is slightly different: biltzar comes from bildu (to gather), while batzar derivates from batu (to unite or unify).
