Billy Briggs

Billy Worth Briggs III (born June 8, 1977) is an American independent musician and songwriter from McKinney, Texas. He has written numerous songs, but is most known for "What I Need" and "Trouble In The Henhouse".

"What I Need" (performed by The Briggs Brothers' Band) is featured in the 2006 film release, 29 Reasons to Run[[1]]. The soundtrack for the movie is composed entirely of independent artists, and has been as equally recognized as the movie itself, winning the Director's Choice Gold Medal of Excellence for Best Impact of Music in a Feature Film at the prestigious 2006 Park City, Utah Film-Music Festival [2] and the Best Original Music Award at the 2006 Bare Bones Festival [3].

His most recent song, "Trouble In The Henhouse", has received extensive local exposure in the Lubbock, Texas area and is known for its rebuke of the Dixie Chicks' 2006 song "Lubbock or Leave It" from their album Taking the Long Way. The song was written by Billy Briggs and his wife, Katie, and performed by the Briggs Brothers Band (consisting of Billy, David and Shawn Briggs).

The lyrics of "Trouble In The Henhouse" [4] directly respond to the negative comments made in a song by the Dixie Chicks, whose lead singer Natalie Maines is from Lubbock. The lyrics of "Lubbock or Leave it" [5] not only take exception to the attitudes of some citizens of Lubbock, but also draw parallels between the Chicks and native Lubbockite Buddy Holly. Briggs, a Buddy Holly fan and a native Lubbockite himself, uses Dixie Chicks song titles to fashion his response to the song. In response to the Chicks' lyric, "Throwin' stones from the top of your rock thinkin' no one can see / The secrets you hide behind your southern hospitality", Briggs writes:

Now you say we're hypocritical, and - girls - that may be true.
So maybe we'll just change our ways and start to follow through.
Yeah - we've seen the light, and we agree it's time to right our wrongs.
The first thing that we're gonna' do is stop buying Dixie Chick songs.
