Bill Jones (artist)

Bill Jones is a photographer, installation artist and performer based in New York. His work is concerned with light as both physical phenomenon and metaphorical figure; he creates work through performance, installation and object art. Jones was part of the Vancouver School of conceptual photography, along with such artists as Rodney Graham, Ian Wallace and Jeff Wall.
Jones' work has been shown in the US and elsewhere, including a mid-career retrospective, "Bill Jones: 10 Years of Multiple-Image Narratives," at the International Center of Photography; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center; Brooklyn Museum; Jewish Museum; Rotunda Gallery; Sandra Gering Gallery; Lombard-Freid Fine Arts; Amy Lipton Gallery; White Columns (all in NY); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Milwaukee Art Museum; Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris; Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, UK.
Jones' 2003 exhibition "Nite Nite", at Sandra Gering Gallery with musician collaborator Ben Neill started a new development of MIDI-controlled video, whereby performed elements of sampled video are "played" by both VJ and musician. Their most recent collaborations include Palladio, an interactive, playable movie based on the novel by Jonathan Dee that premiered in Glasgow and New York City at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater in February and March respectively, 2005. Jones' work was also featured in Playvision[1] at the World Financial Center in the Spring of 2006.

XIX is a new project by Ben Neill with vocalist Mimi Goese, video artist Bill Jones, bassist John Conte and drummer Jim Mussen. XIX explores the expressive qualities of 19th century romanticism with new digital technologies, voice and acoustic instruments. Ambient micro-electronics sampled from 19th century music are combined with Goese's vocals, the futuristic sounds of Neill's mutantrumpet[2] and live interactive video by Jones. Conte and Mussen add live grooves to the mix, creating a digital romantic dreamscape of music and images.

Jones has had a distinguished career as a writer and editor. Previously the managing editor of Arts Magazine, in 1998 he conceived and founded Artbyte: The Magazine of Digital Culture, which he edited for its first two years. He has collaborated with electro-chemist and cancer researcher Merrill Garnett since the publication First Pulse: A Personal Journey in Cancer Research.
