Bill Dearden

Bill Dearden (b 1943) was a professional footballer with Oldham Athletic, Crewe Alexandra, Chester City and Sheffield United, before going into football management with Chesterfield, Mansfield Town, Port Vale and Notts County.

Dearden began his playing career at Oldham Athletic. In 1966 he joined Crewe Alexandra, followed after 18 months by Chester City. He signed for Sheffield United in 1970 where he stayed until 1976, scoring 70 goals in over 160 games.

He returned to Chester City in 1976-77; he was then player/coach at Chesterfield F.C. until he was appointed Assistant Manager in 1981. He left in 1983 for Mansfield Town where he became First Team Coach. From 1994 until June 1999 he was Assistant Manager to John Rudge at Port Vale F.C.

In June 1999 he became Manager at Mansfield Town; he left in January 2002 to manage Notts County, where he stayed exactly 2 years.[1] He was voted Nottinghamshire's Sports Personality of the Year in 2003.[2]
