Biggs and Wedge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biggs and Wedge are characters in a running joke in various Square Enix (originally Square Co., Ltd.) video games, most notably in the Final Fantasy series. They are homages to the Star Wars characters Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles (Luke Skywalker's wingmen on his assault on the first Death Star).

[edit] Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls
When randomly selecting names for thief party members, "Biggs" and "Wedge" are possible options.
[edit] Final Fantasy VI
The duo's first appearance was as a pair of Vector soldiers accompanying Terra in the attack on Narshe to claim a frozen Esper. They're playable for a short period of time, riding in Magitek armor, but are soon eliminated by the Esper Tritoch.
In the Super Nintendo Entertainment System release of the game as Final Fantasy III, Biggs' name was Vicks. This is attributable to Ted Woolsey's often "creative" translation, which rendered "Ultima" as "Atma" and "Phoenix" as "Fenix", though these are due to old character count restrictions. In the re-release as part of the compilation Final Fantasy Anthology for the PlayStation or the standalone release in Europe and Australia, Vicks was changed back to Biggs.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII
In Final Fantasy VII, Biggs and Wedge are members of an ecowarrior organisation called AVALANCHE. They fight under Barret Wallace and alongside the protagonist Cloud Strife whom they do not entirely trust.
Near the beginning of the game, there is a small joke where Wedge escapes from a bombing mission and runs around with his bottom on fire, perhaps hearkening back to A New Hope, when Wedge Antilles was forced pull out of his bombing run after sustaining damage.
Along with another team member called Jessie, they are eventually killed while trying to prevent Shin-Ra from destroying a city support pillar, crushing a section of Midgar called Sector 7; they are injured while trying to save Sector 7 and cannot escape in time.
Notably they play a small part in this game and are not playable. Similar to Final Fantasy VI, their deaths take place near the very beginning of the game.

[edit] Final Fantasy VIII
In Final Fantasy VIII, Biggs and Wedge appear as a pair of overworked, underpaid, rather inept Galbadian soldiers who engage in battle with the main characters a number of times. They mainly provide the comic relief in this particular Final Fantasy game and act as minor bosses.
They appear at the following locations:
- Communications Tower in Dollet
- D-District Prison cell
- Lunatic Pandora (without a fight)
The game takes the Star Wars theme further, with characters named Dodona, Nida, and Piet.
[edit] Final Fantasy X
In Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 Biggs and Wedge are guards at the Luca blitzball stadium.
They also can be scouted to play Blitzball, and they soon develop into two of the most skilled Blitzball players.
Wedge starts as an ideal forward, having high speed, endurance, and shot. By the time he is level 60, he will be a defender, his attack and block increasing as his shot lowers. When he is at the max level, 99, he will be best as goalkeeper, with the second best catching stat.
Biggs, unlike Wedge, keeps his role the whole time. He is a tankish forward with speed barely below that of most other average players. He has very high and rapidly increasing endurance, and generally good shot. His pass becomes good enough, but his attack, block, and catching stats are below average.
In Final Fantasy X-2 they are blitzball players as well. Again they are guards from Luca with a small part.
[edit] Final Fantasy XII
In Final Fantasy XII, two Archadian guards named Gibbs and Deweg stand at the western end of Nalbina Town, blocking the way to the north. At a point in the game (after the Leviathan and its fleet are brought down in Jagd), the player may trigger a comedic scene between the two characters where they discuss what they should do since their commanders have fallen. Gibbs wishes for a change in scenery but Deweg is too obstinate to leave his post.
During their dialogue, it is revealed that Gibbs has a fear of chocobos (or of smelling like one), and the party may drive him away by charging toward him on one. Deweg chases after him and the path is cleared.
[edit] Chrono Trigger
Biggs and Wedge (the former once again translated as Vicks in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game) are sideshow attractions at Norstein Bekkler's Lab at the Millennial Fair; the player must pick the correct one in order to win a prize. They are accompanied by a third character, Piette, which is a reference to Admiral Piett, also from Star Wars.
[edit] Kingdom Hearts II
In Hollow Bastion, there is a storekeeper to a Armor shop named Wedge not too far from the shops run by Huey, Dewey and Louie. Furthermore, the Armor Shop storekeeper in Twilight Town is named Biggs. Also, Biggs and Wedge's AVALANCHE companion Jessie runs the accesory shop in Twilight Town.
[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
In the American version of the game, one of Cid's former business subordinates is named Biggs. He catches up with Cid during the ending, having started his own company, and asks Cid for some help with a project. Earlier, another person berates Cid while Biggs stands by; this person may be Wedge, although his name is not revealed when he is speaking.
[edit] Chocobo's Dungeon 2
In Chocobo's Dungeon 2, Biggs and Wedge appear as two Black Magicians working in the tower of the town. One of them gives you feathers while the other can help combine your items.
